COUNTY INTEREST IN 1959 SOIL BANK REPORTED Miore than 5 Dade County famers have taken the first step toward participation in the 1959 Soil Bank program, Chair¬ man McKaig of the County Agricultural stabilization and Conservation Committee an¬ nounced today. This is the number of farmers who have called at the County ASC Office and requested that rental rates be established for placing part or all of their eli¬ gible cropland in the Conser¬ vation Reserve next year. Geor¬ gia farmers have until October 3, 1958 to make this initial re¬ quest for a rate determination. After receiving the rates, they have until October 24, 1958 to make a formal application for the program if they wish to do so. Under the Conservation Re¬ serve program, the farmer vol¬ untarily reduces his acreage of cultivated crops or tame hay under a 3- to 10- year contract as a surplus adjustment meas¬ ure. In return he receives rental payment on the land taken out of production. During the time the land is in the Conservation Reserve it cannot be used for cropping or grazing and must be devoted to erosion protective conservation uses. The Govern¬ ment shares the cost of carry- ting out land, water, or wildlife conservation practices on the reserved land. At present, according to Mr. McKaig, there is no acreage in the Conservation Reserve under contracts entered into during •the 1956-58 period. For the 1959 program, the Chairman said, the annual rent¬ al rate will be higher for may farms than in the earlier years of the program. The national average payment rate will be $13.50 per acre for contracts beginning next year compared with the $10-per-acre rate pre¬ viously in effect. When the county committee sets a maximum annual pay¬ ment rate for a farm, Chairman McKaig said, it considers prod¬ uctivity, agricultural value and rental rates for similar land in the area. While the indivi¬ dual farm rates will vary above and below the county average rate, they may not be greater than 20 percent of the value of the land on the particular farm, without regard to physical im¬ provement or location. The top limit for any farm in this coun¬ ty is $14.25 per acre. Mr. McKaig urged all local farmers who are interested in the advantages of the 1959 con¬ servation Reserve to be sure and visit the county office in Tren¬ ton before October 3, 1958. The farmer should bring acreage and yield information for his farm for the past 2 years. Enjoy our delicious food and shop in air conditioned comfort. - • Avakian’s — BUY U. S.
