A TRUE FISH STORY
While fishing up Lookout
Creek above Sitton Mill for
about IV 2 miles we found a
slough in a big pasture field
that overflowed during high
water. Edsel Wheeler first told
about seeing some big fish in
it. We decided that they were
carp and should be destroyed,
iso L. S. Blake bought a nylon
minnow seine for the job. Then
on Tuesday, May 5, Tommy
Gray, Wanda Clark, Slim Bur¬
rows’ son and myself decided to
wipe the pest out and we did.
The pool was very small. The
young carp had to have one end
of the seine. The first drag pro¬
duced about 75 lbs. There was
such a commotion it seemed to
frighten the boy and he drop¬
ped the staff. We took it time
about. Wound up with 46, some
weighting 12 lbs. We estimated
an average of 8 lbs. totaling
368 lbs. We also caught and
killed some lamprey eels that
have a vacuum cup that they
slap on a fish and suck it to
death.

SELECTIVE SERVICE
Recent amendments to the
Selective Service Regulations
provide for greater recognition
by local boards of service in the
Reserve and National Guard,
Colonel Mike Y. Hendrix, State
Director of Selective Service for
Ge orgia said today. The
changes reflect a policy of not
Inducting men satisfactorily
participating in military train¬
ing programs while sufficient
numbers are available who are
not taking part in any such
training.
The changes in regulations
were made by the President by
Executive Order No. 10809.
Under the amended regula¬
tions, men who acquire defer¬
ments or exemptions on initial
entry into the National Guard
or Reserve keep those defer¬
ments or exemptions on trans¬
fer to another component so
long as they continue to serve
satisfactorily.
Some initial enlistments in
the Reserve provide that men 1
can discharge their military obli
gation by eight years of satis¬
factory service including not
less than three months of active
duty for training. The amended
regulations also provide for the
retention of this opportunity on
transfer. These changes reflect
provisions of Public Law 85-722,
approved during the last Con¬
gress.
The amendments to the re¬
gulations also authorize the de¬
ferment of Guardsmen or Reser
vists for satisfactory participa¬
tion in the Standby or Retired
Reserve. Previously, only Satis¬
factory participation i n the
Ready Reserve was basis for de¬
ferment from induction.
Another amendment provides
that a man who ceases to be a
member of any Reserve compon
ent after six years of satis¬
factory Ready Reserve service
shall be considered as having
completed service.
