When posed with more con¬ ventionally employed seat cover materials, the striking ensem¬ bles have been drawing the ex¬ cited admiration of passersby on Chicago streets in recent weeks. Number one in the series is ■the Patou casual for wear at afternoon or sports events. It is a bulky coat that tapers toward the knee high hem with full-length buttoned closing. It has a wide notched collar and slit side pockets. Full length sleeves fall out of dropped shoulder arm holes. Designer Patou recommended tweed, fleece or flannel mate¬ rial for the coat, but the ingeni¬ ous Chicago tailors believed they could substitute a seat cover material (known as woven plas¬ tic to the seat cover people). In a black and white tartan iplaid, the plastic material made a handsome coat even more striking than the designer hoped with a fabric that was designed primarily for easy cleaning and long-wear. To heighten the effect of the plaid, the tailors topped the casual coat off in a white vinyl leather collar — the identical material the seat cover design¬ ers use for trim. Combined with a convertible equipped with the same seat cover material, a model in the coat made an over¬ whelming appearance. Typical of the Vogue Couturier series of coats is a full, sweeping formal evening wrap done full with wide stand¬ ing collar that frames the face and neckline. The luxurious coat closes with a jabot. Fabric suggestions from the designer included velvet, slipper satin, taffeta and damask, but again the tailors reached into the seat cover stock of fabrics and came up with a plain woven synthetic in the latest maroon shade, which they believed even more suitable than the dr jner recommendations. The fabric has a tiny black and silver medallion motif that, according to the designer-tai¬ lors, helps to emphasize the formal aspect of the wrap. The ASCAA, while pleased with the handsome results of the tailors’ experiments in seat cover fabrics, is hesitant to predict a trend to look-alike outfits for women and cars. However, according to Vernon Volland, exec ve director, the as. ciation is .ceping a weath¬ er eye on the idea. Garden Club Holds Christmas Party at Home of Mrs .
