The Lunatic Asylum.
Atlanta Correspondence of Macon Telegraph:
Atlanta, May 25.—“A great many
people have a very enormous opinion
of the management and surroundings
of a lunatic asylum,” saida prominent
Georgian to the Telegraph corres

“How so?” was asked. .
“Well, they think that the inside of
an asylum presents a picture of a
howling mob of crazy people, when
the very reverse is the case.

Washington, May 24, 1886.
A new phase is put on President
Cleveland’s matrimonial projects by
one of Washington s society .belles.
Said she, “We girls have no objection
to the President marrying Miss I ol-
som, but we hope there is no trutn in
the rumor that it is Mrs. Folsom and
not her daughter who is to be tiie
bride. If Miss Folsom came here as
the President's daughter,” continued
she, “all the men would rave about
her. and what would become of the
rest of us? As the President s wife, we
would have nothing to fear from hex
undisputed charms.” ,
The President has been wanting to
buy a country home near the city lor
some time, and, it is said lie lias decid
ed upon “Pretty Prospect, which is
on the Georgetown road to leniey-
ton. It is an antiquated stone man
sion, hidden under old forest trees,
and an ideal retreat for spending ins
honeymoon. . . ( ,. „
A sensation was raised in the iO -
eminent Departments here during x
week. Tiie Executive Appropriation
bill, as just reported to the House o
Representatives, has not providea ior
925 Government clerks, and conse-
qeuntly the force must be cut i.own to
that extent. Republicans are panic
stricken again, of course, and every
Republican office holder feels that nis
timefor dismisal has come.
Besides these changes, others aie
contemplated, which involve a reduc
tion of salaries among Government
employees. In the Department of the
Interior the changes go both ways.
The force of the Patent Office is in
creased; that of the Pension Bureau
decreased. Thirty-nine more Hxain-
iners and eight assistants are added in
the former, while in the 1
clerical, force will be reduced

ventors suffer in consequence of de-
lavs in getting their patents. Com
missioner Montgomery claims tnat
with this additional force he can, m a
short time, bring the work up P™cti-
callv to date, and then keep it up.
The’ TJ. S. Patent Office is not only
self supporting, but now turns into
the Treasury, through fens, a yearly
surplus of $150,000. .

While discussing tide subject, Sena
tor Voorhees thought it might be well
to consider how much the enactment
of such legislation would take our oi j
the Treasurv. He was not opposed
to anv reasonable pension measure,
but expressed a desire to know where
he was going before he went. © enf *C
tor Ingalls was not at all bothered
I on this score. He did not care how
‘ much a measure cost the Government,
he said, provided he was convinced it
was a just one. And in that rasping
sarcastic style which he affects, he
criticized the distinguished Wenatoi
from Indiana for stopping to count
the cost. The Republican Senator s
plan may have been a pretty one m
the abstract, but Senator Voorbees
idea was more m sympathy with the
spirit of the country that is
: niore practical and business-like * very
Much has been said about the fail
ure of the present Congress to accom
plish anything, but there is little
doubt that the House of Representa
tives will defeat this fantastic pension
scheme. By thus checking the extrav
agance of the Republican Senate, the
Democratic House will make a record
b all people except the would-
xvill be grateful.
