Baldwin County Women Rally to the Support Of
Southern Jeffersonian Democracy
Enroll your Name and Give your Vigorous Support
to the Success of the Democratic Party
WE THE UNDERSIGNED MEMBERS OF THE BALDWIN COUNTY WOMAN’S DEMOCRATIC CLUB URGE EVERY
WOMAN TO JOIN WITH US THAT BALDWIN COUNTY ROLL UP A LARGE MAJORITY FOR ALL OUR PARTYS
NOMINEES BY VOTING THE STRAIGHT DEMOCRATIC TICKET ON NOVEMBER 6TH.
READ THE RESOLUTION ADOPTED AT OUR ORGANIZATION MEETING AND SEND IN YOUR NAME FOR MEM
BERSHIP IN OUR CLUB BY PHONE OR LETTER TO MRS. J. E. POTTLE. CHAIRMAN; MRS. E A. HCNER. VICE-
CHAIRMAN; MRS. J. H. ENNIS. SECRETARY AND TREASURER
A RESOLUTION
Whereas, there are so many inconsistent and con
flicting statements dealing with personalities in the
National Campaign making it difficult to know whether
or not we should accept the canddates of the Demo
cratic and Republican parties as honorable and clean
statesmen or bleieve the defamatory and scandalous
utterances against them, placing them upon the same
plane of fitness or unfitness,—we recognize that this
Government is one of party administration and not a
personal one and, as voters desiring to wisely cast our
ballots on November the 6th. we are eliminating the
personal equation between these candidates and of
nrcessity in the circumstances, must cast our ballot for
the best political party from our own viewpoint; and,
Whereas, the history of the democratic party shows
that it has best understood and appreciated our con
ditions and problems in our Southland and has sympa
thetically assisted in their solution commencing with the
dark days concluding the Confederacy to the present
time as against the unsympathetic and oppressive at
titude of the republican party from the days of re
construction to this day of the Dyer anti-lynch bill; and.
Whereas, it was the resistence of our democratic
representative* in the last Congress that prevented the
passage of the said Dyer bill which has for its purpose
the levying of a $10,000.00 penalty on the lax-payers
of a county to be used for the benefit of the relatives
of the criminal and without any consideration of the vio
lated and suffering victim and her family; and,
Whereas, the platform of the republican party
pledges itself for the passage of such a law and the
author of the said bill, the republican Congressman L.
C. Dyer, has lately, towit, on October the 13th. stated
that the passage of this law will set in motion the
passage of other laws that will “drive such a thick
wedge through the heart of the solid South and their
white supremacy slogan that it will blow up their whole
unconstititional program." and further stated, after
the solid South has been blown to pieces by Engineer
Hoover, our next President, that will be the finish of the
uullificationists of the South * * * and place them (the
negroes) on an equality with all other races, —thus
making it clear that the success of the republican party
would violate the traditions of our Southland and would
upset the social status of our people and throw our
peaceful section into racial strife with all its attendant
dangers and bloodshed recalling the daysofrecons.ruc-
tion and a vote for the republican c.ndid. es would
be a declaration that we approve of their platform and
of their purposes to pass such law., and.
Whereas, we wish to commend our democratic
representatives for their stand in resistant! the passage
of said law and to urge their continued efforts to pre
vent its passage to the preservation of our present socia,
status and to the peace and harmony now exis ,
tween ourselves and the best members of the colored
race; and. , , , ,
Whereas, the size of Georgias pocket-book and
bank account and her prosperity are depmuimt upon
agriculture and we know that, on account of the desert
ec! farms of those who could not make a living in <-
present conditions, Georgians growing «P■» a "°
those farmers still survivivmg on the farms i need , h fP
and the democratic platform and its candidates pledg
specific and definite aid to our farmers as against du.
past eight years of inertia and broken promises on the
pari of the republican party to relieve the distressing
condition of the farmers; and.
Whereas, the matter of the prohibition law cannot
be modified or changed except by the act of the Con
gress, the same power that enacted it, and the plat
form and the candidates of the democratic party pledged
strict enforcement of the present law as against the
evasive attitude of the republican platform and its
candidates and the utter failure of its enforcement by
the republican administration the past eight years (‘‘by
their fruits ye shall know them”) and particularly in
view of the fact that in the State of Georgia our ‘‘bone
dry law” is much stricter than the National law and
hence in the event of the modification and even re
peal of the National law, our Supreme Court has held
that our State law would still be in force and could not
be changed or modified without State action; and,
Wheieas, the democratic platform and its candi
dates specifically provides for an equality of wages to
women with that of men engaged in the same occupa
tions; and.
Whereas, the wisdom of the framers of our Consti
tution against religious tests as a requirement for office
in these Unites States has been justified in that members
of the Catholic faith have filled the highest offices of
the Judiciary—chief justice of the Supreme Court of
the United States and the highest offices in our Legisla
tive Department—members of Congress and the Senate;
and have stood the test of loyalty and courage both as
officers and as enlisted men on the battle front, and
they are in like manner qualified for the Chief Execu
tive and as President of these United States, and hence
a vote against one on account of religious prejudice is
both unconstitutional anc un-American and is necessari
ly an abuse of the privilege and right to vote as well as
a violation of our fundamental principle of keeping
Church and State separate; and.
Whereas, both our Senators and all of our Con
gressmen of Georgia, who are in a better position than
ourselves to know the true situation relating to the real
issues in this Campaign, are. without exception, not only
sanding by the party themselves, but are unanimously
and enthusiastically urging the support of the Demo
cratic National party:
Therefore, be it resolved: that we the Women
Voters of Baldwin County, are proud of the part that
the Democratic Party has played in the history of our
country and of its achievements of the past and we
pledge our vote and support of the Democratic Party
as representing our national attitude in the matters that
confront our Nation, and to this end we form ourselves
into an organization to be known a« Baldwin County
Woman’s Democratic League, and we urge all voters,
both men and women, not to be misled into the janks
of the Republican Party, under the disguise of “Anti-
Smith" or any other party-name, but to join us in mak
ing the majority for the Democratic Ticket on Novem
ber 6th, the largest in its history.
Be it further resolved: that we thank our Sena
tors and Congressmen for their resistance to the vicious
Republican Dyer bill that threatens the peace and harm
ony of the races in our Southland and our State.
Be it further resolved: that a copy of this resolu
tion be sent to the press for publication.
Unanimously adopted. This October 17th, 1928;
At Milledgeville, Georgia.
