A CAMPAIGN
FOR PURE AIR
What is TheRightTemperature?
The mo*t Important phaac of tho
better health move .tent Is the pure air
campaign. We are reminded of what
Mark Twain is reported to have said
about the weather: “Everybody tulka
about It, but nobody does anything
about- if Nearly everybody knows,
thinks te knows o. pretends to know
about, all there Is to know about pure
air und proper ventilation. Hut If tho
sickness and death statistics are lo bo
trusted, but few people put into prac
tice what they know or profess to
know.
Our savage ancestors. If they could
speak up. would indict our vaunted
civilization. They would remind us
that these respiratory diseases, and
particularly tuberculosis, were prac
tically unknown to :bera.
Arctic and Antarctic explorers en
dure the Intense cold in the polar re
gions for mouths and ever, ytars with
out any thought of catrhing a cold, but
they usually succumb as soon as they
are comfortably housed In the high-
class hotels In Oh* world’s capitals
Pure air Is the a'r of the outdoors—
the air of the open spaces; on condi
tion., of course, inet these open spaces
are far enough removed from great
cities and great factories. Among
health workers, the very catching
phrase. "Health blows through open
windows," has been coined Tills Is-
true, of course, depending upon the
locality of the window** However. It
should be said that ordinarily the out
door air anywhere and everywhere la
purer and more wholesome than In
door air.
It is more Important that tho sir
circulate freely and that it be kept
at the right temperature in our dwell
ings und working places than that
an effort be made to deprive It of
actual Impurities, such as are exhaled
or emanate from ur bodies through
perspiration. This Is not to say that
an effort should not be made to keep
the uir chemically pure. It should, but
It is more Important that It be kept
at tho proper temperature and be al
lowed to circulate or forced to circu
late. This circulation Is the air's own
method of purifying Itself. It is tho
over-heated air of a school room morfc
thnu the vitiated air that makes the
student drowsy and languid and cut
down his mental efficiency.
From many careful experiments, it
has bean found that the proper tem
perature of school rooms, offices und
other work rooms, as well aB resi
dential quarters. Is 68 degrees Fah
renheit.
But tho campaign for pure air, and.
through It. the curbing :»f tho respira
tory diseases, is not only a school
room, office and home problem. It la
a civic problem.
