At noon, the Veteran., and Sons
were served an excellent dinner by
the members of the R. E. Lee Chap
ter of the Daughters of the Con
federacy. The tables, arranged in
the halls of the lower floor of the
beautiful in their
dec-.irations .and presented a scene of
.•are loveliness. The dinner was an
elaborate one and was tastily served
by the ladies. The Veterans in
whose honor the dinner was given
were happy that they should be thus
so kindly remembered by the ladies
who make up the membership of the
Chapter. During the dinner the G.
M. C. band rendered a number of
selections .
At two o’clock the stores i
closed, and the military and a large
concourse of people gathered at the
Court House where the line of march
is to start for the cemetery.
A squad fired a salute at the Con
federate monument, the taps were
sounded, and the line formed under
command fo Lieut Nash.
The column was headed by the G.
M. C. band, followed by the cadet
bnttalian, the Baldwin Blues, auto
mobiles containing Veterans; the
rpeakers, officers and members of
the R. E. Lee Chapter, citizens, the
sons of the Confedcrset were in the
line walking immediately in rear of
the Veterans. The cloumn was a
long and imposing one, as the march
to the cemetery was made. I
The exercises were held around ^
the stand just south of the en
trance. Mr. Otto M. Conn presided
and announced the program. Col.
Marion Allen in a most happy speech
introduced the orator of the day. He
referred to the fact that it was a
Georgia woman, who first suggest
ed the idea of setting aside April
26th for the South to honor its he
roes. He introduced the speaker,
Mr. Darden Asbury, as the son of a
Confederate Veteran, and that he
was true and loyal to the traditions
of the South.
Mr. Asbury’s address was an
appropriate one, in the preparation
of which he had given much thought
and study. It was unique in that it
departed from the usual Memorial
ith the
after the Spanish-Amcrican war. The
animal was ahout seven years old
when purchased.
Capt. Ennis -tales that he had not
worked the mule in several years,
but allowed him the run of the
pasture and lot. He had the mule
buried and felt like he had lost a
faithful servant.
