” PUBLIC MEETING.
• • , Girard, Ala., May 12, lß3g.
At a meeting of a portion of the citizens of
Russell county, for the purpose of taking into
consideration the propriety of
gates to represent the claims of those who
Have been sutferers tn the late Creek Indian
difficulties in Alabama, before the Congress of
the United States,
On motion of Maj. Jno. G. Worsham, Col.
Henry Crowell was called to the Chair, and
Walton B. Harris appointed Secretary. The
object of the meeting having been explained
by the Chairman, the following preamble and
resolutions were ottered by Mr. J. S. Cal
houn, and were adopted unanimously, viz:
We, the claimants against the United
Stales, lor depredations committed by the
Creek Indians in 1336, view with pain, and
almost despair, indications from Congress of
a disposition to adjourn, without considering
the report made by tlie commissioners ap
pointed under an act of Congress of March
3d, 1837. Such a course we feel would he a
cruel act of injustice. Many of us have lost
our all, and some have lost two entire crops.
Our consequential damages are immense, and
call loudly lor the favorable consideration of
Congress; and we cannot perceive the dis
tinction made between the actual and conse
quential losses. Even should Congress adopt
the report made by the commissioners, Nov.
29th, 1837, it will fall infinitely short of our
actual loss. Our necessities force us to ap
peal to the justice of Congress, and we re
spectfully ask that body to consider and de
termine this matter; and whatever justice
Ir.ay order, we pray may he forthwith grant
ed. For the purpose, therefore, of presenting
this subject to the early and prompt considc°
ration of Congress,
Resolved, That a committee of fiuir persons
be appointed by this meeting, to proceed
forthwith to the city of Washington, fir the
fiurpose of urging upon Congress the abso
ute necessity of making the necessary appro
priations, previous to its adjournment, (or the
payment of all just claims against the United
States, resulting from the Creek Indian diffi
culties of 1836 and 1537.
Whereupon Messrs. John Crowell, James
Abercrombie, James S. Calhoun and John
C.inly, were appointed that committee.
Resolved , That said committee he re
quested to ask an interview with the Presi- 1
<lent of the United States, for the purpose of,
making a plain statement of the distressing i
inconveniences to which we are subjected in |
Consequence of the postponement of action in
reference to these claims; and that he be re
spectfully requested to invite the earnest at
tention of Congress to this subject forthwith.
Resolved, That the committee appointed
under the first resolution, have full power to
represent our interests as they may deem
advisable.
On motion of Maj. J. G. Worsham,
. Resolved , That said committee fill all va
cancies that may occur in their body.
On Motion of Mr. J. S Calhoun,
Resolved , That the Chairman of said com
mittee be furnished with a copy of tiie pro
ceedings of this meeting.
On motion of Col. Blake,
Resolved , That ihe proceedings of this
meeting be published in the different news
papers in tin: city of Columbus, and that the
Editors in Irwinton and Florence be re
quested to publish them.
On motion of Col. Murray, the meeting
then adj turned.

MONEY MA RKET.
Thursda , May 10.
This day (lie suspension act expired by
limitation, arid the hanks of the State of New j
York resume specie payments in Cull, hut if I
has been attended as vet with no very re- t
markable results, There is prevalent a great j
feeling of confidence, and money among re- j
f pilar business men is plenty; quite sufficient J
ir the present wa its of trade. The banks
are said to discount sparingly, but the offer
ings of regular business paper are also very
sparingly made. There is a class of dealers
with whom money was never plenty, not
even in the days of wild expansions two years
since. This class still prate of the “screw j
process,” hut ihe work of resumption m ist go j
on securely, especially at this time, when it is
still matter of doubt whether our Southern
neighbors will second the New York banks—
the northern Stales will doubtless follow in
course. “
The convention of the Michigan Batiks
met at Ann Harbor on tire Ist. It was com
posed of eleven chartered and twenty joint
stock hanks. John Biddle, Fsq. was ap
pointed to tlie chnir—a committee of nine
was appointed tn report “ their views in re
lation totheg'neral condition of the currency
of the S ate ad ihe best means of relief.”
The con n; . tee reported in favor of an early
day for resumption, and the convention re
solved that, the Detroit hanks resume on the
I6th, and ‘he other banks of the State within
sixty days thereafter. Further resolved, tlial
the batiks here represented receive and pay
out nil the bank notes of the State entitled to
credit, without recognizing any distinction of
chartered banks, and those under the genera!
banking law.
Both the banks at Middletown (Conn.) re
sume stwcie payments on the Sill insf.
Thus we see (lie work going on, and of
the northern and western banks, those who
can, will resume; but the Southern banks,
who depend on the movements of cotton, will
go with Mr. Biddle. The resumption, in this
manner, will improve exchanges north and
west, and thereby revive the dormant ener
gies of trade in these quarters, and create a
demand for English manufactured goods, and
thereby enable Mr. Biddle to sell his English
stock of cotton without forcing the market too
much. This will put the circle of his opera
tions in motion, and place him in a condition
to resume.
The transactions at the stock exchange to
day ha r e been more extensive than for some
days; the prices still continue firm, and in
some instances still advance. A heavy sale
of Delaware and Hudson closed at an ad
vance of 5-8 per cent; Am. L. and T. im
proved 1-4 per cent; Harlaem, the sale was
large and rose to 57, but the closing sale
56 1-2, which shewed an advance of 1-4 per
cent, on the close of yesterday. Stonington
advanced 1 1-4 per cent. Treasury notes
evinced no material change.
NEW VO It K RACES.
We received, on Tuesday afternoon, an
extra from the otlke of the Spirit of tiie
Times, giving the result of the great sweep
stakes over the Union Course, which came oiT
on Tuesday. This was the largest sweep
stakes ever run fir in this country. There
were 44 subscribers, at SI,OOO entrance—
s2so forfeit. Four of the entrances were de
clared void hv the death of their owners, and
twelve of the colts entered also died. There
were 28 trained for the race, an 1 ns only five
started the purse amounted to $12,000. It
was won as follows :
Mr. John C. Stevens’ Fordham, trained
by Baxter, Jack, - - 11
Mr. Livingston’s Job, trained by Laird,
Abram, - - -3 2
Mr. Robert L. Stevens’ Celeste colt,
trained bv Conover, Valentine, 4 3
Col. Wynn’s John Linton, trained by
Porter, George, - - ~ 1
Mr. Botfs’ Patience, trained by. Harri
son, Medford, - - (list.
Time, 1,49 1-2—1,50.
The concourse in attendance was immense.
The betting was in favor of <be two South-
!ewers, Patience and John Liatoa ; even on
Eordham against any other named horse. —
Ford ha in won without a struggle in 1,49 1-2
—1,50. The day was fine, but the track was
not in very good order, owing to tiie recent
rains.— Baltimore Chronicle.
Mr. Clay is the presidential candidate of
Mr. Biddle. He is the candidate also of the
Biddle (F/itgs, one and all. But even he did
not dare stand up in the defence of his bank
| confederate, on tiie passage of the bill prohi
biting his fraudulent issue ot the notes ol the
old Bank of the United States. Hear him,
| on that occasion, and mark the attempts to
I escape from any known association with
,“Mr. Biddle, his merchandise, his non-re
sumption and his cotton bags,” at ihe mo
ment when every tyro in the politics of the
:country is familiar with the fact, that there is
no act or deed that Mr. Biddle can do that
• will not receive ihe cordial acquiescence,
openly or covertly, of his federal partisans
• and confederates, and that, on the other
, hand, they can do nothing that will not com
mand his ready aid and co-operation.
“ As lor Nicholas Biddle, (says Mr. Clay.)
, his merchandise, his non-resumption, his cot
ton bags, &,c., we have nolliing to do with
them—we want nothing to do with them, so
far as I know the opinions of my friends and
my own mind.”— Albany Argils.
One's Mother. —Around the idea of one’s
mother, the mind of man clings wth fond af
fection. It is the first dear thought stamped
upon our infant hearts when yet soft and ca
pable of receiving the most profound impres
sions, and all the after feelings are more or
less light in comparison. Our passions and
! our wilfulne.ss may lead us far from the object
of our filial Love, we may become wild, head
strong, and angry at her counsels or opposi
tion ; but when death has stilled her monito
ry voice, and nothing hut calm memory re
mains to recapitulate her virtues and good
deeds, a flection, like a flower beaten to the
ground by a rude storm, rises up her head
and srr.iles amidst tier tears. Round that
idea, as we have said, the mind clings with
[fond affection; and even when the earlier pe
riod of our loss forces memory to be silent,
fancy lakes the place of remembrance, and
twines the image of our departed parent with
a garland of graces, and beauties, and vir
tues, which we doubt not that she possessed.
A well coneieved hint to delinquent subscri
bers to newspapers, is furnished in the follow
ing little anecdote. The Indianapolis Jour
nal states that a merchant of Cincinnati hav
ing received an order for some goods from a
man in a neighboring state, went to a news
paper office, and having ascertained that the
person in question was a subscriber, obtained
permission to look at the editor’s ledger.—
Having found that the man had paid his bill,
every year, and was not in arrears, he ex
pressed himself satisfied with the result of the
examination, and determined to fill the order
forthwith.
