ANECDOTE OF BURNS.
Burns was one day at a cattle market
held in a town in Ctimbei land, asid in the
bustle that prevails 011 these occasions he
lost sight of some of li is inspected “cronies.”
He pushed to a tavern, opened the room
of every door, and merely looked in till at
last he came to one in which three jolly
Cumberland blades were enjoying them
selves. As he withdrew his head, one of
them shouttd, “Conte itr Johnny Peep.”
Burns obeyed the call, seated himself at
the table, and in a short time was the life
and soul of the party In the coutsc of
their merriment, it wss proposed that each
should write a stanza of poetry, put it with
half a crown below the candlestick with this
stipulation, that the best poet was to have
his half-crown returned while the other
three were to be expended to treat the
party. VVliat the others wrote has now
sunk into oblivion, but the stanza of the
Aysliire ploughman ran as follows:
Here am 1 Johnny Peep;
I saw three sheep,
And these three sheep saw me;
Half a crown apiece,
Will pay. for their fleece,
And so Johnny Peep gets free.
A roar of laughior followed, and while
the palm of victory wis unanimously vo
ted to Burns, ono of tire Englishmen ex
claimed, “In God’s name who bio you?”
An explanation ensued, and the happy p.ir
ty did not separate the same day they met.

Firc in the Capitol—On Saturday
night last our citizens were aroused be
tween the hours of 11 and 12 o’clock, by
the ringing of bells and the cry of fire,
which proved to be in the State Capitol
The fire having broke out in the interior t f
(he building, aud giving but little light
through the windows, i: was sometime be
fore the persons who first repaired to he
Capital, could le rn its situation. It was
found to proceed from a room on the third
floor, iu tho left wing of the building, which
was occupied last session by the Adjutant
General, and has for a short time been used
as bed-room by Mr. Wm. Nichols, jr.—
It was doubtless occasioned by fire rolling
upon tho floor, which soon burnt through
to the -plastering bene till. The flame was
then drawn between two joists to an open
ing near the door of tre room, a distance
of about 20 feet, where it had made con
siderable progress when discovered by the
occupant. The alarm was immediatel’
given, aud the timely and energetic meas
ures adopted by the citizens the fi e was
soon extinguished. The smoko, became
so thick that it was almost impossible to
seo or breathe; added to which, the nairow
space whero tho firemen were crowded
with their atfes and water vessels: the
noise and confusion which unavoidably en
sued, and we may consider it almost a
miracle that the building was not consumed.
The 100 m beneath the fire, which b id beeu
occupied by the Secretary of the Senate,
was not injured, except in the plasteting o
ver head.
Considerable confusion and inconven
ience arose from the preparations made to
remove the public documents and furniture
from the rooms of the Supreme Court, the
offices of Secretary of State, Comptroller
and Tteasurer. It is understood that for
the future, no person will be permitted to
lodge iu tlio Capital but the state officers.
P reparations are 111 iking to repair the
damages without delay, which it is com
puted will not exceed S2OO. — Ala. hit.
Protraction of Vegetable Life. The fol

was mentioned by Mr Holuton, in the

root, which was found in the hand of an
Egyptian mummy in which situation it had
very probably beon for more than 2,000
years, germinated on exposure to the
atmosphere, though when discovered it
was apparently in a state of perfect dryness.
The root was subsequently put idlo the
ground, whero it grew with roadines and
