PRICE, ONLY ?,Ls<) PER ANN - M.
The public have now before them the Pros
pectus of a work of which Wit and Humor me
to ci n.-titute the principal ingredients Tha
publisher has observed the avidity with which
productions of s:miiir pretensions, are, sought
after, notwithstanding their leaden atiempt* at
wit have been disfigured by Coarse vulgarity,
and too olten ci raced an utter disregard of de
cency, unmindful that
immodest words, admit of no defence;
For want qf decency, is want of souse.
The favorable disposition which the public have
so constantly towards similar at*
tempn to amuse and entertain, has convinced
tiio publisher that a well conducted and pleasing
ttclunse of Wit and Humour, will bo extensive
ly patronized Under this impression Ire has
iiiaiii! extensive arrangements, to procure, at
gi oat cost, the best productions of a humorous
natuie both at home and aluoad, including the
comic works of Hood, Cruikshank, and other
genuine eons of Comes; the Looking Glass, an
unique affair, with mrmernus other laughable
amt nirlh-inspiriiig subjects.
It is impossible, nor shall we think of attempt
ing to give in a mere prospectus, an adequate
idea of the variety and spirit which it shall bo
the constant aitu to infuse into the page® of tha
Co.mic Mirkor. it will be satisfactory, liowev
cr, to show, by the testimony of the most dis
tinguished physicians, that invalids of almost
every description will derive benefit from our
labors; particularly those who are afflicted with
weak rierves, lowness of spirits; and complaints
of a dyspeptic or bilious nature To these our
work will prove invaluable, and the smile cf
good humour which will brighten the counten
ance, and the sense of inward satisfaction and
scif-coniphiccncy which will assuredly put our
patients in the best of humour with themselves
and with the world, will induce them to throw,
forthwith, their bottles, pills, and “phytic to the
dogs.”
We can only specify among the general and
diversified topies of the future pages of the
work:
Touches at the Pride, Whims and Follies of
the Times, in which the lash of satire will bo
usrjd with unsparing severity; but always ia
such general terms, and with such perfect
goodnature, as to give no cause of personal of
fence
Humours and Vagaries of the Police Office,
where human nature is exhibited in its true co
lours, and vice exposed in its naked deformity,
only that the beacon may serve as a warning to
the dissolute and vicious
Doings ol‘ Folks about town; The Ways of
the World, and Peeps behind (ho curtain; caric
atures; Talcs of Hum nr; Sketches of wit anff
anecdotes of celebrated character s, men of Fan
cy arid Fashion, who have nothing else to do but
to entertain their neighbors, and inspire others
with their flashes of wit and merriment, which
is ‘wont to set the table in a roa .”
The whole will be illustrated by numerous
Comic l itgravings, executed at great expense,
and v Licit of themselves will furnish an inex
