Farmer’s Bank of Chattahoochee.
The subscription books for Stock in tin*
above bank were opened at Columbus on
Monday last. The amount of stock ap
portioned to this place was only one thou*
sand shares; and it had been ascertained
for some time, that the demand exceeded
by ten times, that amount. A large
crowd collected around the Court House
at an early hour in the day; and as soon
as the hooks were declared open, a gener
al rush and scramble took [ilace. Me
have before seen men eager to get hold of
money; but here they were possessed with
a rage to get rid of it. To increase the
confusion, there had been some differunce
of opinion among the Commissioners in
regard to the meaning of the act on some
points, which prevented their agreeing
upon any rules for their government.
Accordingly when the rush commenced
they were incapable of acting with any
thing like order or regularity. A scene
of tumult and high excitement prevailad
for some time, which it would be invidi
ous to describe. It was at length allayed
however, by the suggestion of a compro
mise between the two rival parties, which
was finally effected. It was agreed that
the 1030 shares should he equally divi
ded between the friends of each party,
and the crowd separated in a more peace
able manner than had at one time been
feared.
INTERNAL ] IMPROVEMENT.
Stimulated by the promising result of
the enterprise' in South Carolina, the pub
lic spirited citizens of Savannah arc cas
ting about them for the means of facili
tating their intercourse with the interior.
The time was, when Savannah was un
tned Queen of Southern Cities; and in
the wealth of her commerce, the lofty and
generous spirit of her citizens, her splen
did charities, and noble enterprise, she
well deserved the title. But evil times
have fallen on her. Her wealth has been
cripled by the changing position of na
tions; and the pitiful, penurious policy of
our own state legislature, has prevented
her availing herself of the natural advan
tages o! her position; and the consequence
is, she stands nearly isolated from the
«.-i (.lie »*•*»-> li.itead of coustructiniT
channels of communication to their own
seaport, Georgia is permitting her rich
productions to find an outlet in other
states, and Charleston and Mobile, are ri-
sing to emmcnce tt the expense of Sa
vatti.a!i. Apprized of tlnse circuuistan
•ces the citizens of Savannah have lately
projected the enterprise of constructing it i
Railroad front Savannah, through illacon
to Columbus, it is a magnificent, though
a bold scheme; and in this, it partakes of
the. character of ils founders. But al
though bold, it is feasible; money may ac
complish it. Lot a portion of the tm
millions, which \ve were lately et.allied to
toss 'ni the Ban/.', he applied to this under
taking, and it cannot fail. \5 e hope our
friends of Savannah will not let the sub
ject rest where it is.
