Notlrer’s tho spa kling bright,
Like the blazing of the mid-day sun;
Or the flashing of a meteor’s light,
That fir a moment brightly shone:
But !*'hor liko the moon's mild beam,
That on the trembling water’s play;—
Unlike-livd meteor’s gleam,
It shines with sojt but steady ray.
Not her’s the tulips gatiday bloom,
So showy with its crimson dye;
Unyielding any sweot perfume,
It pleases nothing but the eye:
But rather liko that lowly flower,
Which not to all its beauties spread;
Bui in some lone requeoter’d bower,
Lifts modestly its fragrant head.
NUMA.
THE GIFT.
Take, oh lake, the Gift I bring ;
Not the blushing roso of spring,
Not a gem from India’s cave,
Not tho coral of the wave,
Not a wrea.h to deck thy brow,
Not a ring to bind thy vow ;
Bri. liter is the gift I bring,
Friendship’s puriest otforing.
Take 'he Book 1 on, may it be
Treasured long and dear bv thee;
Wealth may buy thee richer toys,
Lore may weave theo brighter joys,
Hope may sing a sweeter lay,
Pleasure shed a softer ray;
• But not love nor wealth may twine,
Wreath so pure as this of mine:
Hope nor pleasure spread a hue,
Half so lnsting, half so true—
Keep, oh keep, the gift I bring,
If is friendship’s offering.
A TRIBUTE OF AFFECTION.
Far" 'bee well—thou knowest I love thee,
Though misfortune on thee frown
And thy prospects, blackening ov’r thee,
Weigh thy manly spirit down; —
Though the tempest round thee raging,
Threaten to annihilate,
And a life of pain and sorrow
Stems decreed to thee by fate;-
Th ugh the flowers which thou hast, loved, —
Flowers which once were blooming fair, —
Now «re leafloss, drooping, withered,
Now are scattered in the air;—
Though there is no earthly object,
Which can thv affections claim,—
Though the friends which round thcehovor,
Proves to be friends in name ....
We must part— perhaps forever !
Wheresoe’er thou shall be driven,
Wav tliy Ond watch o'er thee ever !
Farewel! ' inav wo nice! in heaven 1
