POETRY. ST. PATRICK. Every reader, we suppose, is familiar with the service St Patrick is reported to have confeired on Ireland, in freeing the soil front all hicps o’ reptiles. Assu ning the fact, we present to the readers of the Atlas the followin'' eulogistic ver ses describing the event, which we copy from a .a!e Dublin journal.—.V. V. Mas. 0 ! Sr. Patrick was a gentleman, And came from dacent people, lie built a church in Dublin town, And on it put a steep’e. His father was a Gai.i.aomf.r, His mother was a Brady; His aunt was an O’ Shaijghnessv—- First cousin to O’ fiiubv. Oh! success atte ;d St. Patrick’s fist, ’ For he’s the dacent saint, O! Oh! he gave the snakes and toads a twist lie’s l, a beauty without paint,” O ! The Wicklow hills are very high, Andso’s the hills of Ilowth, sir: But there’s a hill much higher still— Much higher than them both, sir; ’Twas on the top of that high hill St Patrick preach’d his sarmint, That, drove the frogs into the bogs, And banished all the varmint. There’s not a mile in Ireland's isle, Where dirty varmint musters. But there he put his sweet fore-foot, And murdered them.in clusters. The toads went pop—the frogs went hop, Posr-hast into the water; And the snakes committed suicide— To save themselves from slaughter ! Nine hundred thousand reptiles blue, He charmed with sweet discourses And dined on them at Killaloo, In soups and maigre couses! Blind worms cranhng in the dust Were a shame to all the nation, B t he give them a rise, and open’d their eyes To a sen-.c of their situation. No wonder that these Irish lads hould bo so gay and frisky, When Patrick taught them all the use, And the way to make—good whiskey. Oh ! was I but so fortunate As to tie hack to Munster, ’Tis I’d he bound, that from its ground I ne’er more would >nce stir. Tiva ' there 8t Patrick planted turf, And plenty of the praties, With pigs galore, mu gra m'a ast.re, And cabbage—and Indies! Oh ! success attend St. Patrick’s fist, For he’s dacent saint, O! Oh! he gave the makes A toads a twist— He’s “a beauty without paiut,” O! fSOXtJ. BV MRS. HE MAN'S. woke the buried sound that lay In Mernmon’s harp ot yore ? Wl iat spirit on its viewless way •> Along the Nile’s green shore? —-OU ! not the night, and not the storm, And not, the lightning’s fire— But sunlight’s much—the kind- the warm— T is woke the mystic lyre! This, this, awoke tho lyre! What wins the heart’s deep chords to pour Their music forth on life, Like, a sweet voice, prevailing o’er The sounds of torrent strife ? —Oh! not the conflict midst the throng, Not e’en the triumph's hour; Love is the gifled and the strong To wake that music’s power! His breath awakes that power! ADVICE TO YOUNG LADIES. Detest di-guise; remember 'tisyour part By gentle fondness to retain the heart; Lei dutrrprudenee, virtue, take the lead, To fix your choice -but from it ne’er rececde; Despise coquetry—spurn the shallow fool. Who measures out dull complements by rule, And without meaning liken chattering jay, Repeats the same dull strains through ut the day Are men of sense attracted by your fare, Your well tin ned figure, or their Compound gracet Pe mild and equal, moderately gay. Your judp went rat'er than vour wi' display. Phe Jewels of the Princess of Orange. We copy below a li.st of the gems, gold ornaments, &o, seized on Thursday by 1 the Custom House as related in our pa per • estetd iv. These jewels, lliere is lio doubt, are part of those stolen front the) Princess of Orange nearly two years ago. They have been deposited in the vaults of the Branch B ink for safe keeping. They arc estimated to be worth upwards of one hundred thousand dollars. The value of all that was stolen is said to have been more than a million of dollars. The fu gitive in whose lodgings the jewels were seiz and, and who claimed to be the owner of them, is an Italian, who called himself (’arrant, fie arrived in tlhseitva short time since in the packet ship Fran cis I, from Havre, when on hoard of which Vessel lie is said to have called himself j P ilarrio, and said lie had lately been in Algiers, where be bad made purchases of! diamonds. During the examination of! his premises on Thursday, it was discov- j ered that lie had about him between four and five thousand dollars in bank notes, j none til them <>( h smaller denomination than fifty doll trs. Tlv Gazette mentions that a prrsoo answering L'* description was seen at Brooklyn vosf< rdav, e.t\, |-e lie offered to litre a small boat, and from ft,;* circumstance it is supposed that lie was seeking to escape by getting on board some outward bound vessel. He is de scribed to be a short stout man, of swar thy complexion, large black w hiskers, and a face broad and flat. He was dressed in a blue roundabout, grey trow sera and straw hat. A question bus arisen w betli er these recovered jewels, having been siezed for an infraction of the revenue laws, are not, under existing laws, forfeit ed io the United States, and w hether their restitution to their proper owencr will not therefore require a special act of Uongress. The Collector at at all events, will get his ii-ual commissions, which, if the value of jewels is not overated, will be about §l3, 000.—V. r. Ere Post, 30 th ult Anrrdnft .—One day last week the crier of our Curcuit Court, not finding sufficient interest in the proceedings to keep him self awake, and as a general silence pre vailed throughout the room, thought a fa vorable oopnrtunitv to take a nap. He composed himself as comfortably as be could; be had been not long nodding when suddenly a rlap of thunder roused him from bis reverie; starting upon bis feet, be eried out lustilv “.«>lnter /” This set the C ourt in a roar of laughter, for they instantly preeeived what was the matter. One of the Judges remarked to the crier, “Air. ’ do you intend to silence the thunder V' In reply he said he thought someone had knocked a bench over; be that as it may, whenever be hears a clap lof thunder hereafteJ ; the scene in the Court room will be brought to mind.
