We publish in this, day’s paper Lieut.
Clay’s letterto Gen. Woolfolk of the 3d
inst. which produced st considerable
excitement in our town on that night:
upon the strength of which, we made
necessary arrangements to encounter
on enemy. On the morning of the 4th
a company of horse was raised and
e< nt to the fort to ascertain the particu
lars, which will lie seen from Lieut.
Clay's letters. A short confirmation,
In justice to Liens. Clay’s course, will
be discovered by a letter in our columns
from Col. Spivey and lllaj. Holland,
Commanding officers, with the Rev.
Barkley Martin’s statement, as he was
requested in company by the officer’s to
wait on Lieut, Clay, to know the partic
ulars.
FOR THE DEMOCRAT.
We the commanding officers of the
Volunteers who visited Fort Mitchell on
the Ith inst. to ascertain the grounds
Upon which the report was made, to
Gen. Woolfolk, that led many to con
elude that there was a hostile design on
the citizens ofColumbus, from the large
.collections of negroes on Sabbath last,
do in justice to Lieut. Clay, say that we
think he had good and sufficient grounds
to make the communication which was
made to Gen. Woolfolk; and we do be
lieve that Mr. Clay was influenced by
the best and most prudent motives, and
in addition to the suspicious movements
of the negroes on Sunday last, ns was
represented to ns by Mr. Clay, cn;*t.
Crowell k, col. Crowell, we are confir
med that some unusual excitement ex
isted, froni the fact that so-iij * of the
most intelligent of the negroes of the
nation most positive y denied having
bad any knowledge of -uch meeting as
we believ ■‘lid in-et in tin* neighbor
hood o'" Broken Arrow. And Pom all
the fa la that were -ommuni tied to as,
we do ia our judgment i: t: at
would be precautionary prud n« in i. •
town of Columbus and in all the fron
tier settlements, to be so org nised,
keeping out i vigilant watch, knowing
that there exists much discontentment
and host' ity of feeling from a large por
tion of the Creeks towards us; rid be
lieve 1 :->tit would be easy to unite the
Indian- and Slaves in concert against
tic- peace and safety of the In li in set_
tlements. We therefore recommend a
strict ->ntro! in our streets at night, and
In the country of the indian settlements
fl particular eye to Indian and Slave
movements.
E. R. W. SPIVEY,
JAMES C. HOLLAND.
Columbus, Oct. •>, IS3I.
At the request of the com man din? of
jje.'rs who visited Fort Mitchell on the
4lh mst. did I with them wait on the
commanding: officer ofthe United States
Troops stationed there, to know the
grounds upon which the coimnuni ation
refered to was made to Gen. Woolfolk,
and from the circumstances tlmt trans
pired on Sunday last, do think, that
Idem. Clay was justifiable in giving no
tice to Gen. \V oo'fojk, and I do be
lieve that the town of Columbus and
the frontier settlements would do well
to direct their attention to th • means &
measure* thsit would repel any thing
JiUe a rebellion of the slaves, aided by
the-Indians.

GEN. 8. WUOLFOI..K,
/ntendanl of the Town of C olumbus.
Siu—l conceive it my duty to udvi.se
you, that there prevails at this time con
•iderolde excitement in this ncighbnur
iutort, in consequence of the extr »ordi-
Ijiiry ntovrmeiits jrnoM«the ne*rocj; from
tin nuinUr collected at Broken Arrow
and to wets yesterday, and the diversity
of e*eu m‘k rendi»« Jto their muster* and

behoved that Hioy are advised of the se
ditious movements of the negroes else
where, and expect to act in concert with
them. These apprehensions are streng
thened by the intelligence gained in N.
C rrolinn, that to-morrow evening wus
the time appointed for a general insur
rection in that quarter. —Further, it is
well known, that the hostility of the lii
di ms (however masked) would in such an
event induce them to co-operate with the
negroes in any measure tending to the
destruction of the whites; of this fact, we
have the positive assurances of Micha
Barnard, previous to his death. As for
myself, I entertain no fears in relation to
the subject of this communication, hut
have felt it my duty to make known the
apprehensions of others, that it may serve
as a caution to the citizens of your town.
I trust the importance of protection a—
gainst the diabolical scenes of-Virginia,
will plead rny apology for this intrusion.
Very respectfully, your obt. serv.
J. CLAY.
Fort Mitchell , Oct. 4.1831.
Sir—l regret to learn that my hasty
communication of yesterday should have
created considerable commotion among
your inhabitants. To excite tlie* alarms
of a community by groundless fears. I not
only consider highly improper, hut as re
lat-is to the seditions of our negroes high
ly impolitic—giving them importance in
their own estimation. In order to allay
that alarm, permit me to reiterate mv for
mer assinatices, that I feel no appr« hen
-1 sioas o i my part, as 1 cannot entertain
the belief that any rebelious operations
would he attempted in presence of a
force supposed always on the alert, but
upon a subject all-important to the com
munity, I conceived it n»v duty to advise
you of the surmises of others, tho’ in op
position to my own judgment, which may
he established upon light premises, while
theirs may be formed upon better grounds
—a knowledge of the character both of
the red and black inhabitants.
You will Sir, 1 It nst, make allowances
for the natural apprehensions of the times ,
and believe that my only object was to
suggest to you a system of espionnnge,
without exciting a general commotion.
The importance of protection at all
times rendering such measures prudent.
I am Sir, very respectfully,
Your oh . serv’t.
