Jackson says is the bra.est man in the world. In the same Campaign, when the hostiles would be collected in large bodies'll! the swamps, he proposed to Gen. Jackson to let him penetrate the swamp in search of them, and when tluy shot at him he eonld dis cover by the smoke where they were, and ictually did, in more than a dozen instances, perform these daring fe.its of valor, so as to enable the American ar iii v 10 charge and rout them successful ly from their cover, it is also said he never returned from it swamp without bringing a scalp and a poney to the camp, as trophies of victory. I was inf 'lined, whenever the creek delega ttai have gone to W ashington, Jackson never fails to enquire alter his brave warrior Wolotto. The first custom among them which attracted my intention was the prepar ation ami ceremony oftaking their black drink or Acet\ previous to going into Council, which I understand from im memorial usage, is resorted to as a sub stitute for our oath or affirmation, which it is believed purges them of all impurities, before they commence de liberating on public aiinirs. It is a strong decoction of the leaves of the Cassiue zapon, a species of the Ilex, grow spontaneously in the Woods, and a : y be seen on the north common in the lorm of a hedge near the brick yard, They have a regular method of making and delivering it to all the duels who attend; much formality is observed in every thing relative to its pi. paralion and distribution. It is made hj scorching the leaves a little, & adding a large preportior. of them to the water, it is then boiled; when duly pre pared a dark coloured infusion is procu red and poured from one earthen cala bash to another, it froths s.iniost like fermented liquor. It is now circulated in this suong, black k foaming state by tw oof their cation. It is used at ail their treaties s.tid solemn meetings on business. They swallow large draughts of it, until it is ejected from the stom ach, after which they are ready for bu siness. The taste of the drink made from it is hot very diflern t from that of Loliea tea, there is nothing unpleasant and nauseous in it —I took quite a horn of it Among the creeks a remarkable annual ci v- aioiij ;s performed, called tile JJnskc tc. or i i.nh; it is celebrated ;n July or August; the precise tunc is fixed by the 61 ra nod Con nee. Hors of the town, and is sixm ior later, as the state of its nliairs or tin earl mess or lateness of their corn tv.li allow. In Cussctuh these riles last ci,. lit days, in some other towns of less note they continue but for four days. Tins is n most happy institution; it an swers the purpose of a forgiveness of in juries among 'lie people; it restores man to himself, to Ins family, and to Ins na tion. The Lethean quality buries in o lili.ion all past offences, and absolvi s (he Indians from all crimes except murder. It restores peace and order to society, & re!;* \ s the whole aspect of civil affairs. Next they collect old corn cobs and pine burrs, put them into a pot A burn them to ashes, then 4 virgins bring ashes from the bouses, put them in the pot, and stir altogether; the men get white clay A mix it with water to 4 pans; one of these pans of clay, and one of ashes is cairn and to the cabin of the Rtico and the other two to the warrior’s cabin, they then rub themselves with the clay and ashes. Alter this, two men ap pointed to that office, bring some flowers of the Itchauchu/ipucpuggrc, w hich is a sort of dwarfish tobacco; or as the name imports “blossoms of the old mans to bacco” these are prepared on the first day and put into a pan in the Mico’s cabin, a little of this is given to every one present. 7 b be concluded in our next. The Mexican schooner Louisiana Cap tain A lexina fas just arrived in this port. Bln- left Vein Crux the 29th of January, and though the journals we received by ibis channel reach only to the date of tlie 27th December, we learn from sour ces on winch we can place the most per fect reliance that the Vice President Dust amenta, so far from having yielded to the demand of tiie garrisidtis ot Vera Crux and Lina for the removal of the ministry has despatched against them a considera ble body of troops of every description, under the command of General Cad loro n hut these measures were not taken till ev ery means of conciliation had been tried that his prudence and good policy could dictate.- M e know that the Minister of War, M. Facio, had already arrive ! at Jalapa, hut we have not been able to learn whether or not he will place him self at the head of the troops which are to act against the author of the remon strance of Vera Crux. Should he, how over, take the command, wc feel assured from all we know of his character and that.of General Santa-Anna, that, if un fortunately recourse should he had to | arms, the struggle will not be without great blood-shed. We aiso know, that after the payment of all the public officers and after the transmission to England on the 10th January last, by H. B. M. Pack et, the S| bmx, of the sum of one hun dred and thirty-nine thousand and one hundred and sixty dollars, for the pay ment of dividends there was still remain ing in the treasury of the said place up wards of four hundred thousand dollars. We also learn that more than two thirds j of the |inpnlation. of Vera Crux had quitted the city, the greater part of which was on its wav towords Jalapa. We have been assured too that General Santa-An na refused Mr. o‘Gormen the Consul General from England, permission to en ter Vera Crucx; assigning as a reason that he was upon an understanding with the Ministry, whose dismission he requir ed; and that his journey to Mexico had not for its objects, as the Consul profes sed. duties of an official Oaftrrc, but that In' came to mtriirue, by bribery a* <1 every other possible means, in tavor ot these detestable ministers. Such is the sub stance of the information we have been ; able too!ltain relative to the occurrances jof Vera Crux.
