Fi'ice tier oninencernent in Jnly, 1830. the pat ronage tiestoweii upon it has been rapidly and conslantlv augmenting, and i* has at this time a isrgrr circulation than any other monthly Journal published in the United Mtates In ev idence of this fact, it n,av be staled that on a single day in January more than tit>>. names were added to the subscription list; a circum stance without parallel in the liis'ory of similar periodicals. The number of copies printed in each month is Eigtit Thousand Five Hundred. The original plan of the uly's Hook vaiied materially stem that of any imeiican Periods a! then published and though several of its prede cessor:-Imve since its appearance changed ‘.heir peculiar character, and imitated it iu various ics-cts, it i> belie ed that in many .mportant particulars '. is beyond the reach of rivi' y Devoted mailiiv, though not exclu-ively 'o.tho t.idles the ‘Book’ \\?c intended to furnish that winch might M si, ,ed to their wants, then wishes, and tbeir tastes; and to effect lh:s in-, lention the proprietors incurred heavy exper, ea to procure -übject which, until then hud formed no part of the design of existing Maga zi es Dancing, Hiding, and other excrcise> eppi opriate to tnc fair were made the topics of, cnntmentary and embeilidimcnt, and Needle work, in all its diversified branches, received -peria] attention. To these -vere added the many elegant arts which foniaie skill and ingenuity love to prac lice, such as the manufacturi of beautiful arid delicate ornaments in glass, paper, A c to nd in w hich copious instructions and graphic il lustrations were supplied. Nor lias the labour of the Toilet been forgotten since this depart ment has been carefully provided with v batev er could be cansideied propi." aud adorning. All these subjects err still included in 'he general plan, and from tie peculiar advantages which the proprietors of the Lady’s Book p s sess, in regard to urnishing them, they us.hes itatingly say they fear no competition. 'File Lady’s Hook was the first periodical which presented correct views of existing Amer ican Fashions, and in this respect the proprie tors believe they may fairly claim superiority over air their *outemporaries Whatever skill, industry and taste, brought into action and in cited by liberal reward, can accomplish, will be found to characterize their pictonai view’s of ttie Fashions, as well in accurate design and faithful execution, as in rich and brilliant colnur lllg. The typographical execution if the Lady’s Book is such hat the proprietors challenge comparison with any Magazine, whether Eu ropean or American. The best materials and the ablest workmen aie emplo-, ed, and tho most scrupulous regard is paid to neatness harmony, and unif >rmity, in the arrrangement f the va rious subjects which compose the letter-press. In speaking of these mechanical attributes of eqy Lady’s Book, the proprietors have the ut most, confidence thil examination will more than confirm Their statements The Literary department of the Lady’s Book comprises every tiling which is deemed suita’ e for that sex to whose use it is principally devo ted Tales, which are distinguished by intures ting incidents, vigorous narrative chaste ‘fic tion, and tio' absence of mankish sentiment; Poetry, in which sense has not been sacrificed to sound, but where glowing thoughts are for cibly expressed; Essays upon pleasing and in structive subjects; Biographical Sketches of ll lustrious Women Anecdotes untainted by in delicate inuendoes; lively Bon-mois, and hn moroi s topics cheertullv but modestly treated, conttilu*e. along with dc cripti m ol the vari ous embellishments, the reading matter of the work. In superintending this department core liar: been taken to avoid wi niever wua calcula ted to enervate the mind and vitiate the taste, for the proprietors believed that they misunder stood ihe female character, who supposed *fiat weak and silly productions were Preferred to those which had strength and solidity to recorv* mend them. file facilities hich the proprietors of the | * ady’s Book have possessed in the selection of matter have been unusually great, and they have freely availed themselves of the advanta ges thus enjoyed Besides the receipt cf all the European Magazines, from which suitable arti cles might be culled, they have been applied by their Agents and Correspondents abroad, with publications, of which no other copies have been sent to this country, and from those • they have extracted a number of the most attractive which have ever appeared in any American pe riodical. Among others of this kind may be mentioned The Little Black Porter; The Brain trees; The Mathematician, Sets which were first introduced to American readers through the columns of this work These advantages are still possessed and used The former volumes of the l ady’s Rook have not pretended to be exclusively original. In preparing the contents of this work preference has always been given to such articles as were calculated t instruct, as well as please, wherev er they might be found, and though novelty has always been studied, mere originality (so called) has never been considered an absolute evidence of merit—The proprietors have rejected asma ny original communications, sent to them for publication, as would have filled a "volume of some periodicals. It must not be understood that the Lady's Book has been entirely made up ot elected matter Fat from it. A large por lion d‘the contents lias been written expressly for the "'Book ” and that this portion has been well written, those who have not read mnyeasi ly believe when they learn ii. has been furnished by Miss Leslie. The competition which these ■ffe-s will excite, will no doubt, obtain as ex tensive variety of articles from the ablest wii teo. and m this way a large fund of really valu able matter will t>e created, upon which they may at all times draw This, added to the vol utary aid they now receive, will enable them to secure for the Lady's Bc»"k as high .island ing for Original Literary merit, as it has alwavs held for other qualities Though the proprietors of the Lady’s Rook have incurred, and arc still incurring, enormous expenses in making their work and serving .. iho immense pair :uagu they have received. ihe\ do not moan to relax in their exertions Wherev er improvement can be mad" they sre determi ned to aceompUsh it, without r-gnid to cost or labor, confident that (hey will be amply lemu nerated.
