is often solicited to exchange his journal for
country papers; which, however excellent in
themselves, are of little or no use to him; he
has therefore frequently been obliged to dioiiuc
such requests, when it would have given him
pleasure t > comply with them if he could have
alone so consisteniy with his own interest In'
•erder-however, to nuke such exchanges mutu
ally beneficial, he now proposes to exchenge

sertion or two and thereafter cops weekly the
contents of each number of the Former as it
shall reach him, introducing and conducing it

The original plan of the Lady's Book varied
materially from that of toy American Periodical
then pub.ished, and though several of its prede
cessors have since its appearance changed their
peculiar character, and mutated it iu various
respects, it is belie ed that in many important
pa r oculars it i» beyond t«e reach of rivalry.
Devoted mainly, though m., i illusively, to the
L"tlies. the ‘Book’wa» intended to tarnish that
which might be aimed to their wants, their
wishes, and thoir i;tsius; and to effect this in
tention the proprietors incurred heavy expens

formed no mm of the design of existing Maga
zine*. Dancing, Riding, and other exercises

The Literary department of the Lady’s Book
comprises every tiling which is deemed suitable
for that sex to whose use it is principally devo
ted Tales, which are distinguished by interns
tiug incidents, vigorous narrative, chaste dic
tion, and the absence of maukub sentiment;

to sound, but where glowing thoughts are for
