THE DEHOC'kIAT.
SATURDAY. MAY 36, IKJ2.
We are gratified in perceiving of late, a
more conciliatory spirit manifested on the
part of some of the leading Southern
Journals, on the subject of the Tarifl', &
the difficulties with the general «o%em
inent. Indeed we arc not ret entirely
without hope, that as the crisis approach
es, it may he met with becoming temper;
that real patriotism, expanded love of our
whole country, may prevail over local pre
judice and sectional ambition, and that
our political institutions may still be pre
served, to shed their genial influence n
round the destiny of our children, and
dispense to them those blessings which
they have hitherto heaped upon us. The
following paragraph from the (leu. Jour
nal is penned in a spirit worthy of the
high character of the talented editor, and
we can. not but hope it will have ils influ
ence on tlifl public feeln.'g throughout the
State.
*• VVe have received the report oftlie
Secretary oftlie Treasury on the tarilf
Accompanied with such a bill as in his
judgement will best reconcile the rights
and interests of Ihe various sections o,’
the Union- We have neither time nor
health to give it that careful perusal
which ought to precede any expressed
opinion on so important a subject. But
we see enough in the principles he as
sumes. to authorize a hope of its affor
ding the basis of an adjustment. So far
as it gives substantial reliefto the South
we shall be in favor of it, though it may
not relieve ns as far as we think it
ought. We are not for applying the
extremum suppliciuin in the Nullifica
tion or in any other form as long as it
can he avoided. The constitution was
formed upon compromise and are we
abov? continuing to administer it in the
same spirit?—We avow ourselves the
friends of .'uoderate measures. We will
never goto extremites for a mere ab
straction. \Ve closed the war with
England, and wisely closed it when
tlie actual grievance ceased to exist and
shall we he more 'iclgerent against our
of this Union?
Mr. Sol. Smith’a Theatrical corps
made their debut before n Columbus au
dience on Thursday evening lost, in ihe
interesting Comedy of the Soldier’s
Daughter. The Piece is a good one,
and was well sustained hy the compa
ny. Mrs. Smith in the character ol
V\ idow Cheerlv. showed herself per- i
fectly acquainted with the business of!
the Stage, and displayed much fine act
ing. She possesses talents that would
command the attention of any audience,
and grace any boards 11 :>r song. “Ilark
■ tis the Echo” was admirably executed.
Her voice possesses great power and
compass, is inexpressibly sweet on the
higher notes, and was managed with
great taste and judgment. Mr. Sol.
Gov. Ileartall xvas also well
supported: and Frank Heartall had an
able representative in Mr. U. Smith.
Hath of these actors possess superior
talents. The inferior characters of the
comedy were v erv respectably' sustain
ed. And, upon the whole, the piece
was received with much applause by a
very larare and respectable audience.
The Farce was also judiciously’ cart
and well sunported: but it should h, vc
been pruned of some of its impurities
before it w s presented to a mixed au
dience. Indeed public taste in this
cnun'fv is daily becoming move discrim
inating in these matters, and jests and
inuendoes that would once have pass
ed off with general acclamation, would
now he offensive to a large part of the
audience. Pieces therefore prenared
p?r an English audience, or for an earli
er neriod, should undergo a judicious
revision.
Expedition.- A Theatre 70 feet Ion" by
40 wide was eommeneed on Monday
morning'last by our enterprising fellow
citizen Mr. Bates, and finished on
Thursday afternoon, in season for the
•eception of Mr. Sol. Smith’s company
on that evening. A great portion of the
timber, on Monday morning waved to
the breeze in its native forest : four
score hours afterwards, its massive piles
were shaken by the thunder ofnpplause
ip the crowded assemblage of man.

The intelligence oftlie destruction of

the negroes in the island of Trinidad

The following paragraph from a Mont

-Icd in that place of the merits of Mr.
•Smith’s Theatrical corps, now perform
ing in this town.
Our Town is cpiite lively, business of
all kinds brisk. Mr. Sol. Smith aud
his company are still playing tocrow
ded houses, the strongest evidence that
thuy merit the patronage they have re
ceived. The exertions of the manager
lo contribute towards useful mirth
and salutary woe, have been justly
appreciated by a generous public, and
we hazard nothing in saying that ihe
company have given general satisfac
tion.
Mrs. Smith is an actress who de
serves a place in: the lore most rank. We
have had the pleasure during our liit* of
witnessing the performances of many i
female “stars” but in no instance do j
we ever recollect of seeing any one of
them appear to advantage, in so many :
various characters. Assign to our !
favorite Mr. Smith any diameter yon 1
will and she personates it “up to
life itself." This talent being rare >
wherever found, should be liberally
cherished.
Air. li, Smith is a young gentleman
