The L dy » Book has now reached its lourth
volume, completing a period of 18 months
Since Usci-inmencement in July, 1830. the pai
rouige bestowed upon it has been rapidly and
constantly augmenting, and it has at this time
a larger circulation than any other monthly
Journal published in the United States. In ev
idence of this fact, it may be stated that on a
eingie day in January more than fifty names
wore added to the subscription list; a circum
stance without paral'el in the history ot similar
periodicals. The number of copies printed in
each month is Eight Thousand Five Hundred.
The original plan of the Lady's Book v&vied
miter rally from that of any -\meiican Periodical
then published, and though several of its prede
cessors have since its appearance changed then
peculiar character, and imitated it iu various

part, culars it is beyond tho reach of rivalry.
Devoted mainly, though not exclusively. io the
Ladies, the ‘Hook’ wus intended to turnish that
which might be suited to their wants, their
wishes, and their tastes; and to effect this in
tention the proprietors incurred heavy expens
estopn-eure übieets, which, until then, had
formed no part of the design of existing Maga
zines. Dancing, Riding and other exercises
appropriate to the lair were made the topics of
commentary and einbeliv-hinenl, and Needle
work, in all its diversified branches, received
special attention.
To these were added the many elegant arts
which female skill and ingenuity love to prac

delicite ornaments in glass, paper, Ac to aid
in which copious instructions and graphic il
