The original plan of the Lady's Book v&vied miter rally from that of any -\meiican Periodical then published, and though several of its prede cessors have since its appearance changed then peculiar character, and imitated it iu various reepaste, it is believed thai in many important part,culars it is beyond tho reach of rivalry. Devoted mainly,though not exclusively. io the Ladies, the ‘Hook’ wus intended to turnish that which might be suited to their wants, their wishes, and their tastes; and to effect this in tention the proprietors incurred heavy expens estopn-eure übieets, which, until then, had formed no part of the design of existing Maga zines. Dancing, Riding and other exercises appropriate to the lair were made the topics of commentary and einbeliv-hinenl, and Needle work, in all its diversified branches, received special attention.
