As far as our informatioti extends, there is no similar pttper in th iStute, and consequently, there is a great deficiency of means for I obtaining information on many import-: ant subjects, among a large portion of the people. “Knowledge is power,” and it needs no labored argument to prove that it i> essential to the prosperity and happi ness of individuals at and nations. It is tho handmaid of religion, and the bul wark of civil and religious freedom. Experience and observation abundantly prove, that other things being equal, that community is the most happy, virtuous and respectable the mass of whose in habitants embraces thegreatest amount of intelligence. And there is no way of obtaining various anil interesting infor mation so cheap as by taking a newspa per Those who have not the means to obtain, nor tiie time to peruse large volumes, may, at an expense of less than one cent day, obtain much and very val a uable information. —Resides, a news paper, by its regular arrival, keeps up pleasing and healthful excitement of mind; by its agreeable variety, it affords a mental feast to every diversity of taste; and it causes many an hour to pass away agreeably and profitably, which would otherwise be spent in idleness or mischief. PLAN OF PUBLICATION. Two pages will be devoted to reli gious ami literary information, to the defending of the doctrines of grace as taught in the Bible, and the govern ment and discipline of the Church as constituted by Christ and his Apostles: anti to the defence of such benevolent institutions as are calculated to pro mote the best interest of man, and the universal spread of the gospel of Christ. One page will be devoted to domestic and foreign news. The remaining page to advertisements ami other miscella neous matter. While we shall endeavor, mildly, blit firmly, to advocate the cause of truth, we shall carefully avoid party politics and ecclesiastical bigotry. In the rela tion of facts and the expression of opin ions, we shall be governed solely by a view to truth and the general good.
