ANTI -DYSPEPTIC MEDICINE .
For the relief and cure oj Dyspepsia , Chronic Liver
Affections , and most of the diseases arising from
Indigestion.
IN ushering the above medicine to the notice of the
public, the undersigned feels in duty bound to make
a candid statement of its merits, and the peculiar morbid
-ondition of the stomach and alimentarycanal, tor which
he regards it as remedial. It is his desire that this
medicine shall be appreciated by the public, only in pro
r ortion to Us merits; and trom his own long expei i
mce in its use, and from the commendations which it
lias received from a number of his medical brethren
who have been kind enough to make use of it, at his in
stance, he feels satisfied that he can base its success be
tore the public upon no surer foundation than that of its
intrinsic virtues. ...
But while the author feels no hesitation in commit
•ing it to the test of public estimation, he does not otter
tto them as a grand catholicon for all the ills of hu
manity. His experience in the practice of his profession
has been of too ample and diversified a character for him
to indulge a moment in so idle a speculation. It is his
province, however, to recommend it with confidence to
such persons as suffer from indigestion in any of its mul
tiple forms, attended with a constipated condition of the
l cwels. . .
In torpidity of the alimetary canal, whether arising
Horn an imperfect digestion of the food by the stomach
-or from a deficient, or morbid secretion of bile by the
| j- V 7 6r or from the insufficiency of the natnra! vermis
eular mo ions of the bowels, depending upon whatso
ever cause it may— in all such cases he feels assured
(hat he cannot commend it with a confidence too enthu
siastic To persons likewise afflicted with Hemorrhoids
O Piles, with whom it is necessary to keep the bowels
in a soluble state ; arid to the relief of the costiveness
of pregnant women, it will be found eminently bene’
fi rial. In all such cases he begs leave to advise its use,
and he feels confident that its efficacy will command
their approbation. THOS. W. GRIMES, M. D.

Wolfe’s Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps,
Manufactured by the proprietor exclusively, at Schie
dam, in Holland, by a process peculiar to his own fac
tory. It is flavored and medicated, notby the common
harsh berry, but by the choice botannical variety of the
aromatic Italian juniper berry, whose more vinousex
tract is distilled and rectified with its spirituous solvent
and thus becomes a concentrated tincture, of exquisite
flavor and aroma, altogether transcendantin its cordial
and medicinal properties, to any Holland Gin hereto
fore known.
In Gravel, Gout and Rheumatism ; in obstructions o
the Bladder and Kidneys its effects are prompt, decid
ed and invariably reliable. And it is not only a remedy
for these maladies, but in all cases in which they are
produced by drinking bad water, whicli is almost uni
versally the cause of them, it operates as a sure preven
tive.
The distressing effect upon the stomach, bowels and
bladder of travellers, new residents, and all persons un
accustomed to them, produced by the waters of nearly
all our great inland rivers, like the Ohio, Mississippi
and Alabama, from the large quantity of decayed veg
etable matter contained in them, in a state of solution,
is well known; as is also that of the waters of lime
stone regions in producing Gravel, Calculiand Stone in
the Bladder. The Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps is an
absolute corrective of all these injurious properties of
bad water, and consequently prevents the diseases
which they occasion. It is also found to be a cure and
preventive of Fever and Ague, a complaint caused by
the conjoint effects of vegetable malaria in the atmos
phere. and vegetable putrescences in the waters
those districts in which it principally prevails. The
Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps is consequently in grist
demand by.persons travelling, or about to settle in fhcle
parts of the country, especially ; as well as by many in
i every community where it has become i nown c-n ac
count of its various other remedial properties’.
In all cases of a dropsical tendency, it is generally
the only remedy required, when adopted in the early
stages of the disease. In Dyspeptic maladies, when
taken in proper quantities, as a diet drink, and especial
ly at dinner, it is found by uniform experience to be em
inently efficacious in the most obstinate cases, when
even the best of the usual remedies have failed to af
ford more than mere temporary relief. In cases of
Flatulency, it is an immediate and invaluable specific •
and it may be administered in diluted and proportionate
quantities even to young infants, in all those paroxysms
ofgriping pain in the stomach and bowels to which they
are especially subject, as well as in the colic of grown
persons.
Its judicious adoption in connection with the princi
pal meals, or when a sense ofexhaustion dictates its use
never fails to relieve the debility attendant upon pro
tracted Chronic maladies, low temperaments and ex
hausted vital energy, by whatever cause induced.
These are facts to which many of the most eminent
medical men, both in Europe and the United States
have borne testimony and which are corrobated by their
highest written authorities.
The Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps is put up in good
strong bottles, neatly covered and labeled, accompanied
by an Essay upon its properties and uses. For sale by
the principal Druggists in this city and United States

HOLLAND GIN AS A MEDICINE.
In our last number we accompanied the publication
of a circular on this subject, from our fellow citizen
Udolphe Wolfe, Esq., with a brief commentary, expres
j sive of our own views. Since then we have been em
ploying this agent, and thus far with favorable results.
But we are in receipt of several communication on”
the subject from medical men, which serve to shew that
Mr Wolfe’s Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps is very ex
tensively in use, and in the hands of physicians, is
proving itself as a stimulating diuretic to be eminently
successful after other medication with this intent had
| been tried in vain. In one of the cases thus leported
i abdominal dropsy has been cured, and the necessity of
tapping averted j and in another disliessing case of
gravel, so called, has been entirely removed bv the
passage of a calculus of considerable size, which is as
cribed to the use of only two bottles of this article
We know not the object of Mr Wolfe in designating
I h ' s Preparation by thcfsingularly uneuphonious name
ot “Schnapps,” nor ol his denominating it in his ad
j vertisements, the £ concentrated Tincture Os Juniper ’
; instead of perpetuating its ancient title of Holland din.
It is true that he admits it to be no hing else than the
j latter artic.e in its pure state, unadulterated by noxious
drugs, and hence he contradistinguishes it irorn Clin of
| commerce, nearly all of which, as is well known is
manufactured here and elsewhere Horn inferior whiskey
i antl refuse drugs. The name he has given it, however
| ma y serve the purpose. 1 designating ills article, as pre-
I pared exclusively for medical purposes, and thus com
| mend it to physicians for whose convenience it is on
j 6aie on U l, y reputable druggists and apothecaries.
As respects its medicinal and curative effects, we un
derstand him to claim only that it is a pure and reliable
article of Holland Gin , and as such worthy of the cbn
lidence of physicians, in those diseases lr which they
are wont to prescribe it, and have hitherto only been
restrained, by finding it impracticable to obtain the ar
ticle in a pure state. Nor slioulc. any prejudice against
alcoholic medicine deprive the afflicted 01 the benefit of
this article, which from time immemorial has held its
| place among the remedial agencies of the Materia Med
j ica, if it be found worthy ofconfidence b continued ex
: penence. At all events, those who persist in the em c
j pioyment and toleration of ether alcoholic medicines
! as tinctnres, bitters, <£-c., and especially those who pre
scribe Gin under any circumstances, must all unite in -
giving the preference to a pure article over the manifold
| adulterations so rife in the market. Mr Wolfe liberai
j Jy supplies physicians with a sample bottle for analysis
1 and trial,as set forth in his circular, and stakes the
reputation of the remedy upon the innocence, safety,
1 and efficiency of his Holland Gui, when used under
medical advice ; and pledges his own character in bu
siness that the article will not disappoint any who use it
