THE PESTILENCE.
Columbus Invites Refugees.
What She Has Contributed to the Suf
ferers.
The pestilence Is stalking In the plaKue
stricken cities of the southwest.
Columbus has been spared. She has
never been a victim of the yellow fever
and judging the future by the p mt she
never will. In years gone by the fever
has played about her, even at her very
door, yet her skirts were kept clear and
there Is not a single Instance In which
any of her people .have contracted it
within her borders.
The present epidemic forms no excep
tion from the fever ravages. In view of
these facts, and In view of the further
fact that many places are shutting their
doors against the panic stricken people
who are fleeing from the scourge, the
authorities of Columbus have Issued
the following
lO KK4’t lil'llS.
Office of thb Board of Health.
Columbus, Ga., Bept. 7ih, 1878.
This city Is one of the healthiest spots
In the United States.
Th* atmosphere Is so pure that no ma
lignant disease can spread here. We
therefore invite all refugees to come and
remain with us until after a billing frost
at tholr respective homes.
John E. Bacon, M. D.,
President Board of Health.
M. M. Moore, Secretary.
sep9-4t F. G. Wilkins, Mayor.
Columbus not only thus offers a borne
for the hundreds who are trying to escape
from the desolation, but hdr heart has
gone out in sympathy, deep sympathy for
the distress’d. She has forwarded, to
data, as aid to the sufferers, the sum of
$2,583.90. Steps are being taken to raise
more money.
Open Air Meetlas--t'k*nfe of Time.

,1. H. HAMILTON, GROCER.
On the corner of the - intersection of
Oglethorpe. Franklin aud Warren streets
the Grocery House of J. H. Hamilton pre
sents its bold front and invites the passer
by to enter its spacious doors and view
aud purchase Its rich stores.
Just after the close of ihe war, Mr.
Hamilton gathered up his shattered re
sources aud commenced business In a
small way at his present stand, and from
a small beginning it has grown to be one
of the most prosperous and flourishing
houses hi our city. The business grew
and demanded more room. One addition
after another was added till now, three
spacious store rooms are necessary to ac
commodate the Immense stock of groceries
required to supply his trade and a full
crop of clerks to serve the customers.
In his clerical force we Hud our venera
ble friend Mr. Jos. Jefferson, who has
been well and tavornbly known to the
trade ot Columbus for forty years past,
and during that lime has been connected
with the best flouring mills of tho city
and other enterprises.
Also, Aid. 80l 11 n Jefferson can be found
there, always smiling and anxious to
serve his friends.
The friends of Mr. A. M. Moss, of Harris
county—we never knew a man who came
trom there that wasn’t a whole-souled,
olevor lellow, aud he Is by no means, au
exception to the rest—will find him there.
Every establishment, to bo complete,
must have a lady’s man, and as this Is a
complete establishment. It has one In the
(verson of Mr. Johnnie Kiddle, who Is ever
ready to weigh out 'Sugar, Goflee or
Candy for his fair friends, and if none of
them are by sling a side of Bacon for the
sterner eex.
With such a corps of salesmen and the
magnificent stock of goods stored therein,
this establishment cannot fall to continue
Its upward and onward course, extending
Its trade throughout this entire section.
Mr. Hamilton, is also agent for the
justly celebrated Chesapeake Guano,
which is becoming more popular every
season.
HERKINO .V ENUI.AND,
Mannlarturer* ol Buggies, Carriages,
Arc.
The public have for twelve months past
read tu the Times tho advertisement of
the Phenix Carriage Works, on Ogle
thorpe street, but perhaps only those Im
mediately Interested In vehicles have
given It that attention which it merited,
though the proprietors have been slowly
uud sui ely working themselves Into the
front ranks of the Buggy and Carriage
trade. Every vehicle they sell is of their
owu manufacture and guaranteed. Their
specialty Is light and elegant Buggies,
and Express or Delivery Wagons.
Vehicles of thslr manufacture are seen
da.ly hurrying through our streets, and
none are more elegant or handsome. One
thing they insist on in their work is posi
tive reliability; they never put a faulty
piece of Iron, steel, lumber or leather in
their work. Their vehicles, therefore,
an evenness in wear that Is especial
ly commendable; no part is strained by
the weakness of another part. This
guarantees that their work will last.
Messrs. Herring A Eugland are both men
of experience and masters of their trade,
and personally superintend ail their work,
which guarantees that every thing shall
be as represented. If you want a buggy,
go and see them, they always keep a full
stock on hand of their own manufacture,
or get them up to order at short notice.
Go and see them.

Mr. R.B. Crane, who occupies the cor

departure from the ordinary mode of do
ing business In this section and determin
ed to sell (as he buys his goods) for Oanh
Only. That thU was a good move Is evi
denced by the large trade he has. It is
true he is splendidly located to do this,
but the great secret he‘says of it Is that
by getting the. money for everything that
goes out of his store he Is enabled to turn
his capital over very rapidly and sell ev
erything at a very small profit. He says
the people have learned that he sells at
rock-bottom prices and when th* y have
the money to him they come. He Is now
securing his fall and winter stock, and in
