induced the proprietors, at tho urgent request of their friends,
to offer it to the public, which they do with the utmost confi

following certificates, selected from a large number, are, how
ever, stronger testimony than the mere word of the proprietors;
and are all from gentlemen well known in their localities, andot
the highest respectability, mai y of them residing in the city of
Richmond, Va.
F. Boyder, Esq., of the Exchange Hotel, Richmond, known
every where, says he has seen the medicine called Carter’s Span

the diseases for which it is recommended, with the most aston

Anns and Kxvsu—Great Cork—l hereby certify that for
three years 1 had Ague and Fever of the most violent descrip
tion. 1 had several physicians, took large quantities of Quinine
M rcury, and believe ail the tonics advertised, but all without
any permanent relief. At last l tried Carter's Spanish Mixture,
two bottles of which effectually cured me, and lain happy to
say I have had neither chill* or fevers since. I consider it the
best tonic in the world, and the on'y medicine that ever reached

O. R. Luck, Esq., now in the city of Richmond, and for many

to directions.
Dr. Minge, a practicing physician, and formerly of the City
]jotel, in the city of Richmond, says he has witnessed in a num
ber of instances the effects of Carter’s Spanish .Mixture which
were most truly surprising. He says in a case of Consumption,
dependent on the Liver, the good effects were wonderful indeed.
Samuel M. Drinker, oflbe firm of Drinker & Morris, Rich
mond, was cured of Liver Complaint of three years standing,
by the use of two bottles of Carter’s Spanish Mixture.
Gkkat Cure or Scrofula —The editors of the Richmond Re

violent Scrofula, combined with Rheumatism, which entirely
disabled him from work. Two bottles of Carter’s Spanish Mix

notice, say they “cheerfully recommend it to all who are afflicted
with any disease ofthe blood.”
.Still another Cure or Scrofula —1 had a very valuable
boy cured of Scrofula by Carter’s Spanish Mixture. I cousider
it truly a valuable medicine.

Astonishing cure of Sore Legs, after nine years

Copy of letter from Mr. W. J. Langley, of Huntsville,
Yadkin countv, North Carolina, U. S., dated Nov. 1, lri>3.
READ HIS OWN WORDS.
To Professor Holloway,
Sir —It is not my wish to become notorious, neither is this let
ter written for the sake of writing, but to say, tiiat your Oint
ment cured me of the most dreadful cutaneous diseases that
flesh is heir to, and which was considered by all who knew me,
to be entirely beyond the reach of medicine. For nine years I
was afflicted with one of the most painful and troublesome sore
legs that ever fell to the lot of man ; and after trying every med
icine l had over heard of, I resigned to despair all l:ode of being
cored ; but a friend brought me a [couple of large pots of your
Ointment, which caused the sores on my legs to heal, and 1
entirely regained my health to my agreeable surprise anddelight,
and to the astonishment of my friends.

PURE VEGETABLE EXTRACT.
DR. MORSE’S
INVIGORATING CORDIAL.
A PHENOMENON IN MED C NE !
Health restored and Life Lengthened.
Dr. Morse's Invigorating Elixir Cordial.
AT first the properties attributed to Professor Morse’slnvig
orating Elixir or Cordial were deemed fabulous. The pub
lic <Jten deceived could not believe the simple and sublime
ttuthsannounced by the discoverer. Rut lacts, undeniable
facts, attested by witnesses of the highest class and character,
are now triumphing over alldoubts, Incredulity isoverthrown
by a massof testimony which is perfectly irresisiable.
The Elixir remedies, in aii cases, the deplorable evilsarising
from amisuseofthe various organs, w hich make up the won
derful machine called man. It restores to full vigor every deli
cate function connected with that mysterious compoundagency
of matter and mind, necessary to the re-production of human
life. To petrous of feeble muscular frame, or deficient in vital
power, it is recommended as the only means of communicating
that energv which is n< cessary to the proper enjoyment of all
the naturalappetites,as well as the higher mental attributes.—
Its beneficial effects are not confined to either sex or to any age.
The feeble, the ai ling wi fe, the listless, euervab and youth, the
overworn man of business, the victim of nervous depression,
j the individual suffering from general debility, orfromihe weak
ness of a single organ, will find immediate and permanent re
! lief from the use of this incomparable renovator. To tho-e who
1 have predisposition to paralysis, it will prove a complete and
| unlading safeguard, against that terrible malady. 3her iare
! many perhaps, who have so trifled wilhtheircomtitutions.that
! they think themselves beyond the reach of medicine. Let not
even these despair. The Elixirdeals with disease as it exists,
without reference to causes, and will not only remove the dis
order itself, but
REBUILD THE BROKEN CONSTITUTION.
The derangement of tli* system, leading to nervous diseases,
and the forms of nervous disease itself, are so numeroi s that it
would require a column to enumerate the maladies for which
this preparation isaspecific. A few, however, may be enume
rated, viz : neuralgia, tic dolereaux headache, incipient para
lysis, palpitation ofthe heart, spinal affections, mus-ulardebili
ty, tremors, flatulency, a pricking sensation in the flesh, numb
ness, mental weakness ofthe will, indisposition to move, faint
ness after exercise, broken sleep and terrifying dreams, inabili
ty to remain in one placeor ore position, weakness of the pro*
creative organs ; sexual incompetency, melancholy, monomania,
fiuor albus, sinking at the stomach, female it regularities, a
chronic tendency to miscarriage, emaciation, and allcomplaints
growing out of a free indulgence of the passions, and all bare
ness that does not proceed from organic causes, beyond the
reach of medicine.
Whenever the organs to be acted upon are free from malfor
mation or strictural diseases, itis averred that
MORSE'S
INVIGOR A TING E LIXIR.
will replace weakness with strength, incapacity with efficiency,
irregularity with uniform and natural activity, and this not only
without hazard or reaction, but with a happy effect on the gen
eral organization. • Rear in mind thsit all maladies, wherever
they begin, finish with the nervous system, and that the para
lizationof the nerve of motion and sensation is physical death.
Rear in mind, also, thatlor every kind of nervous disease the
Elixir Cordial is the only reliable preparation known.
Cure of Nervous Diseases
No language can convey an adequate idea of the immediate,
and almost miraculous change which it occasions in the diseas
ed, debilitated and shattered nervous system, w'hether broken
down by excess, weak by nature, or impaired by sickness—the
unstrung and relaxed organization is at once braced, re-vivified
and built up. The mental and physical symptoms of nervous
disease vanish together under its influence. Nor is the effect
temporary, on the contrary the relief is permanent—for the
Cordial properties of the medicine reach the constitution itself,
aud restore it to its normal condition.
Loss of Memory.
Gonfusion, giddiness, rush of blood In the head, melancholy, de
bility, histeria, wretcheddess, thoughts of self-destruction, fear
of insanity, dyspepsia, general prostratian, irritability, nervous
ness, inability to sleep, diseases incident to females, decay of
the ptopagating functions, hysteria, monomania, vagueterrors,
palpitatation of the heart, impotency, constipation, &c., from
whatever cause arising, it is, it there is any reliance to be placed
on human testimony, is absolutely infallible.
A Great Medicine for Females.
The unparalleled effects of this great restorative, in nil com
plaints incident to f males, mark anew era in the initials of
medicine. Thousands of stimulants havfe been invented—thou
sands of invigorantsconcocted—a 1 purporting to be specified
in the various diseasesand derangements, to which the delicate
formation of woman render her liable.
Every Woman of Sense
who suffers from weakness;derangement,nervousness, tremors,
pains in the back, or any other disorder, whether peculiar to her
sex. or common iu both sexes, to give the InvigoratingCordia
a trial.
Married Persons.
Or others, will find this Cordial, after they have used a bottle
or two, a thorough regenerator of the system. In all directions
are to be found the happy parents of healthy offspring- who
would not have been so but for this extraordinary preparation.
And itis equally potent for the many diseases for which it is
recommended. Thousands of vounu men have been restored by
using it,aud liotin asingle instance hasit failed to benefit them.
Persons of Pale Complexion.
Os consumptive habits, are restored by the use’of a bottle or
two, to bloom and vigor, changing the skin from a pale, yellow,
sickly color, to a beautiful florid complexion,
To the Misguided.
These aresome of the sad and nielancholyeflects produced by
early habits ot youth, viz.: weakness of the back and limbs,
pains in the head, dimness of thesight, loss of muscular power,
palpitation ofthe heart, dyspepsia, nervousirritability, derange
ment of the digestive functions, general debility, symptoms of
consumption, Sec.
Mentally, the tearful effects on the mind are much to be
dreaded. Loss of memory, confusion of ideas, depression of
spirits, evil forebodings, aversion to society, self distrust, love
of solitude.timidity, &.c.,are some of the evils produced. All
thus afflicted,
Before Contemplating Marriage,
should reflect that a sound mind and oody are the most necessa
ry requisites to promote cjnnubial happiness, indeed, without
these, the journey through life becomes a weary pilgrimage—
the prospect, hourly darkens the view ; the mind becomes shad
owed with despair, and filled with melancholy r flection that
toe happiness of another becomes blighted with your own.
Caution.
Dr. Morse’s Invigorating Cordial has been counterfeited by
some unprincipled persons.
In future all the genuine Cordial will have tho proprietor’s
facsimile pasted over the cork of each bottle, aud the following

JEW DAVID’S OR HEBREW PLASTER IN NORTH
CAROLINA.
Messrs. Scovil & Mead: I have been troubled with the chronic
rheumatism for the last twe ive jears. On the Ist of July, ISJ9, t
was so bad that I could not turn myself in bed, and the pain so
severe that I had not slept a wink for six days. At this time iny
attendingphysician prescribed the “Hebrew Plaster,”aud it acted
like a charm; the pain left me, and 1 slept more than half ofthe
night, and in three days 1 was able to ride out. I consider the
“Hebrew Plaster” tlie best remedy for all sorts of pairs now in
use. G.W. AI’MINN.

The Hebrew Plaster, especially, is an Universal Panacea for local
pains. I have also found it a must excellent application for
Sprains and Bruises, it gives universal satisfaction wherever

STAMPEDE MIXTURE
For the Fever and Ague and Chagres Fever.
THE Proprietor of thi3 Medicine will state, without hesi
tation or tear of contradiction, that the Stampede M ix
ture has cured more persons where it has been introduced
than any other medicine in use for the above disease. This
medicine has neither Arsenic or Quinine in its composjiion,
all of the ingredients are of a perfectly healthy character
and highly stimulating and invigorating in their tendency.
Persons while using this medicine will not be affected by
exposure to water or a damp atmosphere no more than in
their usual health. Planters in sections of country where
the Ague prevails, will do well to adopt this medicin i, as
the patient is not obliged to lay by while under treatment
and they may be assured of a speedy cure. The proprietor
could introduce thousands of certificates from those of the
highest respectability, but prefers saving to the sick buy one

The Southern Man.
THE Rev. Wm. H. Wilburn, recently delivered a lecture be |
fore the, Now Yorli JMeicautile Library Association on “The g
Southern Man.” We annex some extracts which both fortheir 1
fidelity and beauty will be read with interest.
Where the summer lengthens itself into nine continuous ||
months, where the day is deliciousand tbe night cooland spicy,!’
the Southern man grows up a noble specimen of the physical!
man, endowed with nervous vitality, for he is accustomed from I
his earliesi years to the most active exercises, engaged in all the!
athletic sports of youth on foot and horseback,in the forest and!
and the field ; used to the pistol and the rifle, and the chase.—l
Yet in every motion there is a degree of lassitude, surprising t<
those who understand not the effect of his clime, and which ye
imparts a degree of ease, of graceful elegance, rarely possesseii
excepi by an inhabitant of a warm southern climate.
In the long, glorious noontides, swinging luxuriously in his
hammock, he inhales delicious airs, but laden, alas ! with death f
they have ou his cheek the marks of his origin, and the tale is
soon told that tqe liver of the southern man is altogether out of
order. This is a most magnifleant hint, and the fact was contem
plated by the Greeks who made the word “melancholy,” which
means, by etymology, “a black or disordered liver.”
We fully agree w itb the gifted author of the above extract, and
are happy to call the attention of those having a diseased liver,
or any of those diseased socommom to a Southern climate, to
to Hampton’s Vegetable Tincture the great invigorator of the
. system; by its use all suffering from lassitude and weakness be
comes robust and full of energy, we offer below some of the un
solicited testimony,

of prolonging human life. The many cures it has wrought is a
