AN ACT making Appropriations for the Civil and Diplo
matic Expenses .of Government for the year ending the
thirtieth of June, one thousand eight hundred and fifty
fiye, and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Represen
tatives of the United States of America in Congress As
sembled, That the following sums be, and the same are
hereby, appropriated, out of any money in the treasury not
otherwise appropriated, for the objects hereafter expressed,
for the fiscal year ending the thirtieth o! June, one thou
sand eight hundred and fifty-five, namely :
Legislative. —For com* ,-nsation and mileage of senators,
one hundred and six thousand eight hundred and sixty-two
dollars, and eighty cents ;
For compensation and mileage of members of the House
of Representatives, and delegates l’.om Territories, thn e
hundred and forty-four thousand eight hundred dollars ;
For compensation of the officers, clerks, messengers, and
others receiving an annual salary, in the service, oi the Sen
ate, fifty-seven thousand and ten dollars ;
For compensation of the officers and clerks of the House

paid for compositionand press-work exceed, pro rata, those
established by the printing act of August lite twenty sixth,

the Decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States,

F’or the purchase of copies of the Reports of the Supreme

For cash system and military patents, under laws piior to
twenty-eighth of September, one thousand eight hundred
and fifty ; patents and other records ; tract-books and blank
books for this and district land offices ; binding plats and
field-notes ; stationery, office furniture, and repairs of same,
and miscellaneous items, twenty-three thousand five hund
red and twenty-five dollars.
For contingent expenses, in addition, under swamp land
act of twenty-eightn of September, one thousand eight
hundred and fifty ; military bounty acts of twentv-eignth
of September, one thousand eight hundred and fifty, and

Indian Affairs, commencing the twelfth of June, eighteen

For compensation of four watchmen for building occu
pied by the office of Indian Affairs, commencing the fif
teenth of June, eighteen hundred and fifty-four,t wothou

FOR THE GENERAL PURPOSES OF THE DE
PARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR.
For compensation of four watchmen for the eastern wing
of the Patent office, occupied by the Secrotary of the Inte
rior, two thousand four hundred dollars.
For the purchase of books for the library of the Patent
Office, and for supplying a deficiency in former appropria
tions, the sum of five thousand dollars, to be paid out of
the patent fund.
To reimburse the patent fund for expenses already indui
ed and paid for furnishing the new wing of the Patent Of
fice building, the sum of sixteen thousand dollars of the
appropriation made by the act approved thirty-first of May,
eighteen hundred and fifty-four, for furnishing said wing,
be and the same is hereby authorized to be transferred by
the proper accounting officers of the treasury to the cred
it of the patent fund.
For contingent expenses of said building; viz.:
For labor, fuel, lights, and incidental expenses, two thou
sand five hundred dollars.
For the preservation of the collections of the Exploring
Expedition.
For compensation of keepers, watchmen, and laborers,
two thousand nine hundred and eighty dollars.

For compensation of the surveyor general of Wisconsin
and lowa, and the clerks in his office, eight thousand three
hundred dollars.

disallowed several payments in settling the accounts of said
