‘‘Some hundred yards east of the house, in tho open
f, e ]d, but. nearly concealed by the spreading branches of a
large cedar an i tall shrubbery, is tiie old family cemetery.
It contains but a single monument of any architectua] in
terest, and that stands upon the graves of Mr. Calhoun’s
father, mother, and sister Catharine, Mrs. Dr. Waddel.
He had it earvvd in Washington, and placed in its present
<:ite a few years before his death. Each of its four sides
has an inscription—tiny read as follow's:
‘“Patrick Calhoun, the father of John Caldwell Calhoun.
Porn in the county of Donegal, Ireland, June 11, 1727,
and died January 15,1790, in his 69th year.’
“‘Martha Caldwell, the wife of Patrick Calhoun, and
the mother of Catharine, William, James, John Caldwell,
and Patrick Calhoun. Born on Cub Creek, Charlotte
county, Virginia, 1750 —died May’ 1802, aged 52 years.’
‘“Catharine, the daughter of Patrick and Martha Cal
houn, and the first wife of the Rev. Dr.Waddel, died in
March, 179 G, in the 21st year of her age, without issue.’
‘“Erected by John C. Calhoun, the surviving member
cf the family, 1844 J
“The graves ot W illiam and James, whose names were
mentioned above, are also here, with becoming memorials.
The former was the father oi the Hon. Mrs. Armisted
Burt, and Mrs. Dr. Degraffenreid, of Abbeville; the latter,
of our energetic fellow-citizen, Mr. J. A. Calhoun, and the
Hon. James Calhoun, of Alabama.”

AN ACT to amend “An act to oarry’into effect a treaty
between the United States acdlUreat Britain,” signed on
the fifth of June, eighteen hundred and fifty lour and ap
proved August filth, eighteen and fifty-four.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa
tives of the United States of America in Congress as
sembled, That from and after mo date when the reviprocity
treaty of the fifth June, eighteen hundred and fifty-four, en
tered into between Great Britain and the United States,
shall go into effect, the Secretary of the Treasury shall be*
and he is hereby, adthorize<| and required to refund out of
any money in the treasuryAo the several persons entitled
thereto, such sums ofskall have been collected
as duties on “fish qpd!Tk|(ids, the products of fish, and of
all other the water,” imported into the
United and If ter the eleventh day of Septem
ber, aijri fifty-four, the date of the pro
mulgftron by the President ot the United States of the rec
iprocity treaty aforesaid, ou proof sat slactory to the aaid
Secretary, that the arlifcies aforesaid were the products of
someone of the Britfeh Provinces of New Brunswick,
Canada, Nova ScotiaC Newfoundland, or Prince Edward’s
Island, and imported therefrom into the United Statea and
duties duly paid thereon, which Have not been refunded on
export; and he is furiher authorized and required, from and
after the day the treaty aforesaid shall go iuto effect, La
cancel, on like proof, atjy warehouse bonds to
secure the duties that may have bees given for any of eaid
articles imported as aforesaid. )
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That from and after
the date when the reciprocity treaty of the sth June, eigh
teen hundred and,fifty-four, entered iuto between Great
Britain and the United State?, shail go into effect m the
manner therein prescribed, the Cecretary of the Treasury
shail be, and he fe hereby, authorised to refund out of any
money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, to the
persons entitled thereto, such sums of money a* shall have

ration of Georgetown shall have lull power and rmthority

the inhalants thereof, and to cause the streets, ianespand
alleys,any of them, or any portion of them, to be light
ed bygfas or otherwise, and to provide for the expense of
any such works or improvements either by a special tax or
out of its corporate funds generally, or both at its discre
tion.

ROCK ISLAND FACTORY.
UNDER the provisions of a Deed of Trust made to the un
dersigned try the Rock Island Factory, we will offer for
sale on Monday 23d dav of April next, at the llock Island
Factory, all those tracts of laud in the State of Alabama tying
on tbechattahooebee River, to wit: Fiity acres in the South
East Quarter of Section 35, Township Id", Range 3 ‘, adjoining
the lands of Robert S. Hardaway and W’lliam D. Cairns, m
Russell county, Alabama, and running up said river to the
north half of said section 35, belonging to Stewart and Fon
taine, and thence running back due west so as to include said
Fitly acres. Also, ail that tract or parcel of land lying on the
Chattahoochee River, in the fiouth East Quarter of Seolion 35,
Township IS, Range 30,in Uussc-ll County, Ala., adjoining the
slip of land in said section, on the South belonging to William
D. Cairns, and ou the west bounded by land belonging to said
Cairns and on the north by the land of John Fontaine, {contain
ing fifty acres, more or less, together with the right o (way run
ning from said land to the south side of section 35; tnence
along said south line to section 34, continuing thence to tho
West Point road, as reserved in a deed made to Robert Taylor.
Also, all that parcel of laud lying east sos the Columbus
Road tunning to West Point t..rough Somerville, which is con
taiued in the South East Quarter of the South East Quarter of
Section 34,and twenty six and a half acres of land ljing ad
joining to the same, in the to oh West Quarter of the South

tracts arc not to extend west of the Columbus road. Audi all
aud singular, the buildings, out houses, watercourses, water
privileges, advantages, hereditaments, and : ppurtenances,
whatever, to the said several parcels of land belonging, or in
anywise appertaining or which the said Rock Island Factory
have acquired from the State of Georgia by Legislative Enact
ment. Also, all the personal property to the said Factory be
longing, consisting oi Machinery, fools, Wagons, Mules, Ilors
ses, Material for the manufacture of Paper, Manufactured Pa
pier, and all and every part and parcel ot the personal estate of
the Rock Island Factory The improvements on the land con
sist of a Paper Factory, Warehouses, Outhouses, and all the
couvenincies'for operatives necessaiy to carry on the same.
