Messrs. Scovil 6c Mead: I have been troubled with the chronic
rheumatism for the last twe Ive years. On the Ist of July, 1849,1
was so bad that I could not turn myself in bed, and tbe pain so
severe that I had not slept a wink for six days. At this time iny
attending physician prescribed the “Hebrew Plaster,” and it acted
like a charm; the pain left me, and I slept more than half of the
night, and in three days I was able to ride out. I consider the
“Hebrew Plaster” the best remedy for ail sorts of pains now in
use. G. Vr. M’MINN.

Thi-3 remedy has von for itself such notoriety from its
cures of every variety of pulmonary disease, that it is en

any community where it lus been employed. So wide is
the field of its usefulness, aud so numerous the cases of its
cures, that almost every section of the country abounds
in persons publioiy known ,who have been restored from
alarming and even desperate diseases of the lungs by its
use. When once tried its superiority over every other med
icine of its kind is too apparent to escape observation, and
where its virtues are known, the public no longer hesitate
what antidote to employ for the distressing and dangerous
affections of the pulmonary organs which aie incident to
our climate. And not only in fordmidable attacks upon
tho lungs, but for the milder varieties of Colds, Coughs,
Hoarseness, &c.; and for Children it is tho pleasantest aud

TREATMENT OF DYSPEPSIA.
Our National Disease.
Feeble or Imberfect Digestion or Dyspepsia, in seme of its
forms, is truly the Motional Disease of America. It causes, in
directly, three-fourths of the sickness common to this climate. It
causes impure Blood, irritations and acrid Humors in the Stom
ach, Liver, Bowels and Glands, and the system thus poisoned be
comes a prey to an endless train of evil symptoms, of which the
following are a few, viz: Headache, Giddiness, Mervousness,
Low Spirits, Dimness of Vision, with Mute, Speck or Webs be
fore the F.yes, Itching of the Nostrils, Dullness of hearing, and
Ringing or Drumming in the Ears, Bad taste in the Mouth.
Tightness or Weight about the Chest , Difficulty of Breathing,
Sense cf Suffocation in lying down or ascending stairs, Palpita
tion or uneasy feeling about, the Heart, Irregular vr deficient Ap
petite, sense of sinking at the iua-t, sinking at the Stomach, Ac
ridity, Heartburn, pain or fullness in the Abdomen, Costiveness,
6ac. Some of these symptoms alwoy - appear in Dyspepsia. They
are often mistaken for, and treated as other diseases. Their
main seat and source, however, is the Stomach, and a deranged
condition of the digestive functions. ‘To meet and overcome those
symptoms radically, and restore perfect, health and vigor to thi
system, a safe and certain remedy is found combining all the most
valuable ingredients offered by the vegetable Kingdom, in Dr.
MeCLIMTOCK’S DYi-PEPTIC ELIXIR. Its daily use
would be a blessing to thousands who suffer from the bane of
weakness. As the prescription of a leading physician, it can be

This valuable medicine, which has become celebrated for the
number of extraordinary cures effected through its agency, has
induced the proprietors, at the urgent requestor their friends,
to offer it to the public, which they do with the utmost confi
dence in its virtues and wonderful curative properties. The

ever, stronger testimony than the mere word of the proprietors;

Richmond, Va.

Ague and Fever— Great Cure—l hereby certify that for
three years I had Ague and Fever of the most violent descrip

Mercury, and believe all the tonics advertised, but nil without
any permanent relief. At last i tried Carter’s Spanish Mixture,
two bottles of which effectually cured me, and lam happy to
say I have had neither chills or fevers since. 1 consider it the

Luck says he has never known it to fail when taken according
to directions.
Dr. Minsre,a practicing physician, arid formerly of the City
Hotel, in the city of Richmond, says he has witnes-ed in a num
ber of instances the effects of Carter’s Spanish A/ixture which
were most truly surprising. lie says in a case of Consumption,
dependent on ihe Liver, the good effects were wonderful indeed.
Samuel M. Drinker, of the firm of Drinker & Morris, Rich

Tiie Southern Man.
rp HE Rev. Wm. 11. Milburn, recently delivered a lecture be
JL fore the New Yorh.fi/eicantile Library Association on “The
Southern Man.” We annex someextracts which both fortheir
fidelity and beauty will be read with interest.
Where the summer lengthens itself into nine continuous
months, where the day is deliciotn anti the night cool and spicy,
the Southern man grows up a noble specimen of the physical
mau, endowed with nervous vitality, for he is accustomed from
hie earliest years to the most active exercises, ei gaged in all the
athletic sports of youth on foot and horseback, in the iorcst and
and the held ; used to the pistol ami the rifle, and the chase.—
Yet in every motion there is a degree ol lassitude, surprising to
those who understand not the effect ot his clime, and which yet
imparts a degree of ease, of graceful elegance, rarely possessed
except by an inhabitant ol a warm southern climate.
In the lona, glorious noontides, swinging luxuriously in his
hammock, he inhales delicious airs, but laden,alas ! with death;
they have on his cheek ti * marks of his origin, and the tale is
goon told that tqe liver of the southern man is altogether out of
order. This is a most magniheant hint, and the fact was contem
plated by the Greeks who made tire word “melancholy,” which
means, by etymology, “a black or disordered liver.”
We fully agree with the gifted author of the above extract, and
are happy to call the attention of ihc-se having a diseased liver,
or any of those diseased so c.ommom to a Southern climate, to
to Hampton’s Vegetable Tincture the great invigomtor of ihe
| system; by ita use all sulferingfrom lassitude and weakness be
-1 comes robust and full of energy, we offer below some ol the un
solicited testimony,
