way. between Savannah and Augusta, and McDuffiie
waa shot in the hip. In the next affair, they went up to
the North Carolina line, and here a difficulty arose be
tween the seconds about the plan of operations and the
matter was adjourned. The thrird meeting took plaoe at
Campbelltoi; on the Carolina side of the Savannah river.
Two shots were exchanged. At the second fire, Mc-
Duffie receeived the ballet of his adversary in the small
jo the back, and haAnia left arm broken. The wound
waa not mortal, but left him in a wretched state of infir
mity. which kept him a lingering invalid for the rest of
bis days.
It is with with much satisfaction that 1 am able to report
the perfect and amicable reconciliation of these two distin
guished men, before the death of McDuffie. This happen
ed in Augusta, and was brought about by the friendly offi
ces of Mr. John Bones, a gentleman who is well known to
do the honors of that hospitable city, with a grace and
courtesy, good will, liberality and kindness of heart, which
have won lor him friendly mention whenever his name is
spoke i. McDuffie happened to be Augusta, and in a state
of exhaustion, for he was approaching his closing period—
when Bones persuaded him to his sofa and le,t him to a
temporary repose. In a little while after, Bones encoun
tered Cumming passing his house. He told him of Mc-
Duffiie’s presence within it, and of his situation, and frank
ly said to hirn, “Go up by yourself, and be reconciled. I
know that you harbor no malice, and that he has n* sin
gle feeling of hostility against you in his bosom.” The
suggestion was as frankly adopted as acted upon. The
parties met as if they never had been enemies. Cumming
i-at an hour with his prostrate rival, left him with the most
amicable interchange of feeling, and the tear was iniiis eya.
as he said to Bones on his departure. “What would 1 not
do or give to relieve him from his cruel euffering !” It was
one which his own hand had inflicted, and he deeply re
gretted the shot. Ido not know that 1 give you the actual
words which were used in quoted portion of my state
ment, but the substance, is truly stated. Such a concilia
tion is one which every biographer will delight to record.
It was honorable to all the parties.

KT Great Cure of Rheumatism.—The Editors oTthe
Richmond Republican, of Dec. 24th, 1852, say that Car
ter’s Spanish Mixture is no quack medicide.
They had a man in their press room who was afflicted
with violent mercurial rheumatism, who was continually
complaining of misery in the back, limbs and joints his
eyes had become feverish and mattery, neck swollen, throat
sore, and all the symptoms of rheumatism, combined with
rwo bottles of Carter’s Spanish Mixture cur
ed him, and, in an editorial notice as above, they bear tes
timony to its wonderful, effects, and say their only regret
is, that all suffering with diseases of the blood are no:
aware of the existence of such a medicine. They cheer
fully recommend it.
See their certificate, and notice in full around the bottle.

Dr. Hoofland’s German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, are justly reckoned amongst our most valuable
medicines. In cases of dyspepsia, it acts like magic,
strengthening the tone of the stomach, stimulating the di

brightness to the eye. There are thousands in this commu

hereafter add their testimony.
