Successful incubation with a hen or with an incubator begins with the selection and care of the eggs for aaxamg. Provide plenty of clean roomy n«sts allowing one nest to every four hens. Gather the eggs at least once a day. In bad weather if there is a tendency for the eggs to become soiled gather them several times a day. Pick eggs ofuniform size and shape, of good shell textlire, free from ridg es, and medium to large in size. All small eggs should be discarded, and extremely large eggs are to be avoid ed. Any eggs that are badly soiled may be washed, but never wash an egg unless necessary, as experiments have shown that washed eggs do not hatch as well. While the color of the shell has nothing to do with the hatchability, it is well to select uni formity of color, as the color is an inherited characteristic and uniform! ty is desirable from a market stand, point. Eggs keep best for hatching pur poses at a temperature between fifty and sixty degrees. The embryo may begin to develop at 70 degrees or above, and then die, thus ruining egg for hatching purposes, it is therefore very important that hatch ing eggs be kept in a cool place. Set eggs as soon as possible after they are laid. The fresher the bet ter. Good hatches can not be expect ed from eggs that are kept any length of time. It is not a good rule to save eggs for hatching longer than seven days, especially in warm weather. They may be held for three weeks, but eggs of that age will hatch very poorly. It is not necessary to turn eggs un less they are kept longer than a week. After seven days they should be rolled or turned regular once or twice a day. Bear in mind that to get large per ct. hatches good eegs are one of the essentials. Gather the eggs fre quently, select carefully, keep in cool place and set them while they are still fresh. DR. J.
