A*. K. SMITH. A DIABOLICAL CRIME (By ELI B. HUBBARD) Within thirty days time three officials of the law have given up their lives and their blood has been shed on the soil of Jones County by men who have no respect for the dignity of the courts, the majesty of the law and the soverignty of government. The killing of the two county policemen recently was one of the most diabolical crimes openingly committed in the broad open day time within the confines of a civilized country. The circumstances of the killing demonstrate that the killing was the result of a carefully laid plot, and that the perpetrators of the crime deliberated and pre meditated the taking of these two officials’ lives. The killing of xhe three county policemen in Jones county within the last thirty days demonstrates these two great facts: First, A person who will engage in vio lating laws which are crimes prohibitum will finally de velop into a criminal who will commit crime per se. - Second. That the crminally inclined, when indulged in the violation of laws by those in whom the law vests the power of administering and enforcing the law will lose respect for the law and the dignity of the courts, and the final consequences will be that such criminal element will not hesitate to commit the most atrocious crime. It is sad to contemplate that we have in Georgia a band of outlaws who not only boldly murder officials of the law, but hold over those who will take their place the threat that their lives will be the cost they will pay if they accept the position and interfere with their operation. It is the solemn duty of every law abiding citizen to assist in finding the ones that murdered these two of- WORIHLHATS f\ Carlton “SHE” NOTICES YOUR HAT If she admires your hat, it gives her a thrill of pride, because secretly she thinks you selected it just to please her. ADVERTISING OF GORDON (By ELI B. HUBBARD) The publicity given to Gordon and the clay indus tries of Wilkinson County in last Sunday’s Macon News was very creditable and deserving. With the circulation of the Macon News, and the several thousand extra copies purchased by the Central of Georgia Railway Company, to be used for advertising purposes, the value of our county and her resources willl be well advertised over the United States, and we predict that good results will flow therefrom. k The several articles in the special edition were statements of facts as they exist in this county, and were no exageration of either of the future of Gordon or the valuable deposits of clay in the county. Those who have any doubt about the great possibil ities of the county should come to the county and be con vinced of the facts. PROFESSOR BOWLES HEADS IRWINTON SCHOOL Professor “Buck” Bowles has been elected as prin cipal of Irwinton High School, and will take active charge at the opening of the Fall Term next Monday morning, The parents of Irwinton welcome Professor Bowles to the town, and they feel that he will make Irwinton High School one among the very best schools in tht county. Mr. Bowles is a brother of Professor Bowles, of Gor don Hight School, and has had a broad exper ience in school work, and is well fitted for the position to which he has been elected. The people of Irwinton will give to him their un qualified cooperation in his work here. PROTECT THE CLAY INDUSTRY (By ELI B. HUBBARD) According to an article in the special edition of The Macon News edvertising the clays of Wilkinson County last Sunday, there is enough clay in this county to sup ply the trade for six hundred years. The development of the clays of this county are the greatest resources that we have, and the interest of the owners of this clay, the manufactourers and those who are benefitted directly or indirectly should be protected. I had a conversation with Congressman Larsen ir Jeffersonville last week, and he gave me the information that the Interstate Commerce Commission has passed ar. oder decreasing the freight rate on clays shipped into th' United States to such an extent that it meant the de struction of the market price of theclays mined in this country. He said that he and Congressman Vinson had both a brief with the Commission in the form of a pro tect asking that the order'^be vacated, but that he did not believe that the Commission would vacate it. Our clays are just as good as the clays in Europe and Asia, but it cost more to produce it in this country on account of the high price paid for labor. With a low price for labor in the foreign countries, and a cheap freight rats they will be able to sell to the' clay manu facturers of this country clays cheaper than we can min' it in this county. We believe that congress should levy such a high duty on imports of this nature as will protect the clay industry of this county. This is a matter of serious" concern to the people of this county, and it might be well enough for those whe have influence with your Congressman and senator to write to them and urge immediate action. COLDS AND TUBERCULOSIS This period of the year is the period of colds which often hang on and on and terminate tn more serious condl tlons. Colds are no longer to be con sidered as matters of small Import ance, but signs of marked danger. Any cold er cough which persists for longer than three weeks is in all probability already a serious thing which deserves the attention of a first-class physician. Persistent colds are very frequently, tn truth, something else, perhaps Tuber culosis. Now every one knows that Tuber culosis is a serious matter, not alone to the individual, who is the unhappy possessor thereof, but also to the fam ily, the community, and the State. Tuberculosis often manifests itself merely by a cough, whieh hangs on. It is in the early stage that most can be done for the trouble. It calls for prompt and active treatment of a high ly specialized type. To temporize is to court serious danger. Most home remedies for colda and cough are not effective, many of them only palliate the symptoms and give the victim a false sense of security. If the cold or cough is already Tubercu losis, home remedies and so-called "cough syrups” may do much damage and cause loss of much very valuable time. Don’t guess, go to your physician and find out for sure. Don’t waste time, time is money, time is life, in Tu berculosis. The cough is the sign at the railroad crossing, STOP!! LOOK!! LISTEN!! SAFETY FIRST!!! Concerning Vaccination The question of vaccination against colds and influenza as a preventive is quite often brought to the physician, and, in the present status of the mat ter, it is sometimes hard to be sure what to do. With some individuals, it is the right thing, or apparently so, while with others it is not. Some seem to get Immunity for one or two years; whether this is actually true or is only apparently or accidentally jo, it is impossible to tell. The rea son of this is that all “stock vaccines” (as they are called) are made to fit most cases of Invasion; that is, sev eral of the germs that are classed as catarrhal are used with the hope that one of them may be the causative agent in the glYen .case. If so, pos sibly good i^accompllslied;''tf -t|at, no good will be aecured. Theoretically, •f a “smear” is 'made from an indi vidual’s nose or throat on a “plate" and the germs are grown in the in cubator and from these germs a *c cine is made, it should prevent gtoure attacks of this; disease. This would be the right, reasonable procedure, but it has two serious drawbacks, one is time, the other is the expense The present method of vaccination with stock vaccines is not at all positive. Heshhmobile Should Be Kept On Road Many counties in our state are fa ntliar with the Healthmoblle that has been on the road visiting the rural communities of the state for several years, meeting the mothers and exam uing the babies. All who are at all conversant with this work will be sorry to learn that it has been dlscon tlnued, and none more so than the State Board of Health. This has been necessitated on account of lack of /unds. The total appropriation for health work In our state is only 3c per capita, while our neighboring states have from 2 to 8 times as much. The Healthiisobile was presented to our state as a gift from the Phi-Mu Sorority and for this reason, if for no' other, it is a shame that it will have >9 cease its visits of mercy and edu cation. Dr. Abercrombie, the Secre tary of the State Board of Health, in forms the editor that he hopes to put It back on the road in the spring, and that he will do his best to find the dioney to keep it going during the sum mer and fall. It is to be hoped that It can be done. This and other ac tivities of our State Board being either discontinued or curtailed should arouse our people to -do something to put our state in better position along these lines. Our General Assembly should find money enough to properly take care of the health of our peo ple. Smaller Scar From Vaccination The cosmetic effect, if such a term can be used of vaccination against smallpox, has been greatly improved in the new method proposed of a nee die prick instead of a scratch. The new technique also allows the imme diate cleansing of the arm from the virus and practically leaves no oppor tunity of invasion of pus forming germs. The State Board of Health can sup ply the vjrue for vaccination against smallpox at greatly reduced prices. There are today at least 30,00-0 ac tlve cases of Tuberculosis in Geqrgia, a very large percentage of which were contracted in childhood. Babies do not have the usual symptoms of Tuber cnlosis even when sick with it. All children who have been in contact with an active case of Tuberculosis more than likely get the germ and If later In years will develop Babiei should no removed from Die presence of cue who is a currier avd distribute!
