PAGE 4B THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS • THE COMMERCE NEWS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2016 Hurdle ... Continued from IB an in prime position for a no. 1 seed entering the 8-A tournament. Heading into Saturday’s game, Tiger head coach Brad Puckett and his staff didn’t sugarcoat the situ ation. He made his girls aware that Lakeview was one of the top teams in Class A and Commerce would be under a lot of pressure to perform. “The challenge is before you,” Puckett told his team prior to the game. “We have to learn to rise up to the challenge of a big fight, and enjoy the challenge and embrace it.” The Tigers and Lions were in a tight defensive battle for much of the con test, but Commerce rose to the occasion when it counted the most. The Lady Tigers trailed by two points (24-22) after half time, but quickly cut into that deficit early in the third quarter. After back-to-back layups by Asia Jones at the end of the third quar ter, Commerce pulled out to a 36-34 lead and never looked back. Point guard Mya Jones and post Nia Johnson both put together strong late-game perfor mances, scoring a com bined 17 out of the Tiger’s 26 fourth-quarter points. Puckett credited John son’s play inside the paint and her teammates’ ability to get the ball inside late in the game. “Nia Johnson was a game-changer tonight,” said Puckett. “A game-changer tonight was Nia Johnson. Finally in the fourth quarter, we started getting the ball inside. She had nine points, but bet ter late than never. Once she gets the ball and gets her back to the basket, she puts it in. She finishes.” Puckett also credited freshman guard Autumn Mathis for “a gutsy perfor mance in a big moment.” Mathis was one of the Tigers that came off the bench to fill in for Brasha Jones, who went down with an injury in the first quarter. “You’re not sure if a freshman can handle that sort of pressure and intensity, but she handled it beautifully,” said Puck ett. “She kept doing what her teammates told her to do. She’s very coach- able. She stayed low and kept the ball in front of her and played really good defense.” Mathis only scored three points on the night, but her basket was a wide-open three-pointer late in the fourth quarter that allowed Commerce to begin to put the game out of reach for the Lions. Photos by Cameron Whitlock “The three-pointer she hit was huge for us,” said Puckett. “She was wide open and a lot of freshman in that situation would have hesitated. She didn’t do that one bit. She knocked it down.” Mya Jones led the Lady Tiger scoring effort with 25 Options Commerce ‘s Madison Rodriguez looks for an open a passing lane during the Lady Tigers win over Lakeview on Saturday. points. Asia Jones added 23 while Johnson added nine. “This is a complete team effort,” said Puckett. “That’s what makes this team much different from last year.” While the Tigers are happy to be 7-0 in the region, Puckett knows his team has a long way to go before being tourna ment-ready. He plans on his team taking things one game at a time and improv ing week-in and week-out. “We still aren’t where we need to be,” he said. “We can’t ever look back, we have to always be looking forward to the next ball game. We need to keep on working to get better.” Commerce hosted Oconee County on Tues day but details were unavailable at press time. The Tigers will host Towns County on Friday (7 p.m.) and Athens Christian on Saturday (4 p.m.).
