That’s exactly where I found myself this past week. I’d put off knee surgery for four years before it got to the point that I had to have it done. I am thankful for the encouragement that I found in my circle of friends and family. Still, when the medical team whisked me away from my family, just for a moment I felt all alone. I’m thankful that was a fleeting feeling. My God showed up on the scene that day. I laid there and my mind went directly to the Lord. As I began to reflect on God’s mercy, grace, and love, I felt his presence over take me. I realized I am never alone. The Great Comforter is by my side. 2 Corinthians 1:34 says the God of all comfort will comfort us during our tribulations. Yes I was encouraged by God Almighty right there in the surgery center. The encouragement didn’t end there. In fact, it had started days before when a dear friend began to encourage me with her words. Within the hour we were in a church ser vice, and I heard more words of encouragement being prayed over my life by another person. Today I am truly thankful for every kind word or deed that was sown into my life. I am so thankful for a group of people who answered the tug on their heart during my time of need. Scripture urges Chris tians to encourage one another. Acts 4:36 men tions Barnabas, defined as the son of encourage ment. Barnabas was will ing to mentor Paul during his early ministry. We read of some who questioned Paul’s motives, but Barn abas embraced him and the duo went head strong into the min istry of Jesus Christ. This is a wonderful example of sowing seeds into the lives of new Chris tians, knowing that they can grow and have a mighty work for the Lord. In Acts 13 we read where John Mark had turned back after he had set out to minister with Paul and Barnabas. In Acts 15, the duo had a difficult conversation. Paul wanted to visit every city when they had pro claimed the gospel to see how they were. Barnabas wanted to enlist the help of John Mark. The mighty men of God were at an impasse. Could John Mark be trusted? The son of encouragement was willing to take him along. This is a wonderful example of giving people a second chance. We’ve all been there. We’ve let people down, and people have let us down. Short ly thereafter, Barnabas and John Mark headed to Cypms, and we find that John Mark could be tmsted. Where would we be without the encouragers in our lives? First of all, let us be reminded that God is there to comfort us. Next, let us be reminded that there will be people who show up just in time to help us in our time of need. Whether we are sick, tired, in a crisis, or see our value for the king dom. As Christians, we are called to encourage. May we hold that calling close to our hearts. We also may come to a point in our lives that we need encouragement. Look to God and look around because a Barnabas will show up in your time of need. Sherry Lewis of Mays ville is pastor at New Beginnings Ministry. She can be reached at ben- scoop@aol.com.
