Pruitt celebrates 96 years
Mrs. Gladys Pruitt was honored
with a birthday celebration on
Saturday. She celebrated her 96th
birthday with a host of family and
friends. She was born Feb. 29,1920.
We want to wish her a very happy
birthday.

Mary Parson was honored with dinner
at Cracker Barrel with 40 of her family and
friends present. She turned 85 on Feb. 23.
Silver Shoals Baptist Church will be hav
ing revival services on March 28-30
beginning at 7 p.m. Guest speakers
will be Kent Barrett, Dwayne Ryles
and Greg Poole. Come join us. Ken
Barrett is the pastor. We hope to see
you there.
Keep Cindy and Dale Herbert and
their family in your prayers. Cindy’s
brother, Charles Edward “Eddie”
Gosnell, of Danielsville, passed away
on Sunday. Keep this family in your
prayers. He will be greatly missed.
The community was saddened
to hear of the passing of Radd Cape. He
leaves his wife, Annette Poole Cape; son,
Barry Cape; grandsons, brothers, sister, niec
es, nephews and a host of other family and
friends. Radd will be greatly missed.

Drug dog pays visit
to Commerce library
On Thursday, Feb. 25, the Jackson County
Humane Society presented the first of regular
monthly programs at the Commerce Public
Library. Over 50 patrons met the Commerce
Police Department’s new K9 star, “Officer
Max.”
His handler and trainer, Officer Christo
pher Holly demonstrated Max’s skills in find
ing narcotics, searching for evidence, and
nabbing suspects. The Czech shepherd is
loyal to his handler and trains with him 16
hours a week. Max is a member of Officer
Holly’s family and spends his off-duty hours
as a beloved family pet.
Watch for details of the next JCHS spon
sored program at the library.
Plant Swap
The library’s annual plant swap will be
held Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m to 1 p.m.
More details will be announced later.

A number of new books have been added
to the children and young adult sections
during the past few weeks. They include:

•Pax, by Sara Pennypacker, about the

• The Thickety, by J.A. White, a tale about
a girl and the power of magic for grades 5
to 8. The next two books in the series, Well
of Witches and The Whispering Trees, were
added last month.
Kids Book Club
The Kids Book Club will discuss Because
of Winn Dixie on Friday, March 11, at 4 p.m.
This club focuses on the fun of reading.

Auto show to benefit Jackson Creative
Jackson County APDD (Advocates for
People with Developmental Disabilities)
and Friends of Advantage is selling special
T-shirts in recognition of its fifth annual
Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show to benefit
Jackson Creative, a center for the develop-
mentally disabled.
The show will be held on Saturday
March 19, (rain date April 2) from noon
until 4 p.m. at the Lanier Technical College
parking lot in Commerce. The entry fee
for vehicles is $10, and there will be best-
in-show, people’s choice, top motorcycle
and top-10 awards. The show will also have
vendor space available for $10.

St. Patrick's Day
community Bingo
tournament set
There will be a St. Patrick’s Day community
Bingo tournament on Thursday March 17, at the
Jefferson Civic Center. The “Bingo for a Cause”
event, hosted by Bentley Assisted Living, will
benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the first game
begins at 4 p.m. Dinner is served at 5 p.m. and
final prizes will be awarded at 6:30 p.m.
The first Bingo card is free and each addi
tional card is $1. There will be prizes for the
most creative St. Patrick’s Day attire.
Space is limited. Those planning to attend
should RSVP by March 14 to 706-387-7000.
The civic center is located at 65 Kissam
Street, Jefferson.
Habitat homeowner
meetings set in
Commerce in March
A series of Habitat for Humanity meetings
will be held in March to discuss criteria for
potential homeowner opportunities. All meet
ings will be held at the Habitat Restore in
Commerce: Habitat ReStore, 661 S. Elm St.,
Commerce (located near Lanier Tech and the
Health Department.)
The meetings will be held: Thursday March
10 6 p.m.; Saturday March 12,10 a.m.; Sunday
March 13, 4 p.m.; Friday March 18, 10 a.m.;
Saturday March 19,2 p.m.; and Tuesday March
22,6 p.m.

An overview of Habitat for Humanity will
be given, and all questions will be answered
at the meetings. Bring a friend and come
join us. For more information, go to the Jack-
son County Habitat for Humanity website at

at 706-3366061. To become a local Habitat for
Humanity homeowner, you must meet the
following criteria:
• Live or work in Jackson County
• Have a housing need (currently in unsafe,
unhealthy or overcrowded situation, homeless,
etc.)
• Have income that will allow you to make
a monthly house payment between $350 and
$450 a month (income includes wages, Social
Security TANF, child support)
• A willingness to work, not only on your
own home, but also on homes being built
for others If you answered yes to all of these
questions, you may be qualified to be a Habitat
for Humanity homeowner. To apply you must
attend one of the following applicant orienta
tion meetings. Applications will be distributed
during the meeting.
State horse show
open to local students
The 2016 State 4-H Horse Show will be June
7-11 in Perry. The event is open to youth in
grades fourth-12th.
Riding divisions include: hunt seat, stock
seat, ranch horse, contest and saddle seat.
Age divisions are cloverleaf (fourth-sixth
grades), junior (seventh and eighth grades)
and senior (ninth-12th grades). Juniors and
seniors have the opportunity to qualify to com
pete at the 4-H Southern Regional Horse Show
against 4-H’ers from more than 10 other states.
Those wanting to show must have their
Intent to Show Form turned into the Banks
County 4-H Office by March 10.

Pre-K Registration
Pre-Kindergarten Applications can be picked up at
Commerce Primary School beginning March 7th
for the 2016-2017 school year.
The child:
• must be 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2016
• must live in the attendance area of school where applying
• must have a copy of a certified birth certificate attached
to application
• must have an updated shot record (form 3231) attached to
application
• must have a copy of a social security card attached to
application
Pick up an application in the front office at Commerce
Primary School between the hours of 8:30 am and 2:30 pm.
Deadline for submitting applications is April 1, 2016.
