Commerce's season opener cut
short due to poor conditions
BY CAMERON WHITLOCK
Last Thursday, the Commerce golf
team teed off on the 2016 season in an
exhibition matchup with Jefferson at
Double Oaks.
And while the match had to be cut
short due to low visibility and foul
weather conditions, head coach Mat
thew Lund said there were plenty of
positives to take away from Thursday’s
round.
“I felt like our boys played very well
for how awful the conditions were,”
said Lund. “We have practiced in bad
conditions as well and they were used
to the course playing like it did.”
Lund said he was especially
impressed by the progress of Wesley
Counts and Andrew Lathem - both of
whom were on pace to shoot career-
low scores after six holes.
After six holes, Wade McMahan was
the low medalist for Commerce with a
28. Sage Culpepper and Counts both
carded 29s after six holes.
“Sage battled and played well
enough to post a low score, but he will
be the first to tell you that he should
have shot much better,” said Lund.
“Jeremy Davis, our freshman starter,
performed as well as he could have
for playing in his first official varsity
match. His drives are improving, as is
his short game.”
A young Commerce girls’ team strug
gled in its opening bout, but according
to Lund, the Lady Tigers “definitely got
a learning experience out of it.”
“McKenzie McRee and Channing
Martin both hung with their competi
tors and well as they could have,” said
Lund. “Lauren Pyrzenski made some
nice shots as well and kept her cool
while playing against upperclassmen.”
Martin posted a 38 after six holes.
McRee carded a 41, while Pyrzenski
posted a 45.
Commerce will travel to Chimney
Oaks Golf Club on Thursday for an
exhibition match with Banks County.
