Her cham pion barrow was pur chased by Northeast Georgia Livestock. Youths fare well in heifer, hog shows The 2016 Jackson County Market Hog Show and Ed Tolbert Memorial Steer and Heifer Show were held Feb. 12-13 at the Jackson County Comprehensive High School agricultural facility. Friday night’s activities included the market hog show, steer show, honorary showmanship showdown, sale of champions, and the annual cake auction. In the market hog show, there were three divisions of show manship novice (fifth and sixth grade), intermediate (seventh-eighth grade), and senior (tenth-twelfth grade). West Jackson Middle School’s Savannah Page and Colton Boone walked away with champion showman ship honors in the novice and intermediate divisions, and Jackson County FFA member Kaylie Boone was chosen as champion senior showman. The weight class es followed showmanship, and Cindy Cooper of Jackson County FFA received grand champion honors while Savannah Page showed the reserve champion. The steer show exhibitors included Kayley Edwards, Taylor Davis, Cindy Cooper and Madison Abbs. Cooper received both grand and reserve champion honors in the steer show. One of the highlights of the show was the third annu al honorary showmanship showdown where the local members of the community participate in the showman ship lesson with some of the showmen and a showmen in a class of their own. Hon orary showmen included Rodney Gary, Celinda Wil son, Jamie Hitzges, Randy Gambrell and Jerbundy Mullis. After much delibera tion, the judges chose Hitzg es, assistant superintendent of Jackson County Schools, as the 2016 honorary show manship champion. Hitzg es, along with his coaches Jackson Schieszer, Jesse Cronic, and Peyton Puckett, was recognized, and Hitzges received a belt buckle for his accomplishment. On Saturday, the cattle show began with show manship, which consisted of three divisions: novice (fourth and seventh grade), intermediate (eighth-lOth grade), and senior (llth-12th grade). He exhibited Sugar, a Shorthorn heifer owned by Jackson Scheiszer, and Hitzges was award a belt buckle for his accomplishment. There were 11 different breed classes represented in the heifer show, which followed showmanship. The grand champion and reserve champion Angus heifers were exhibited by Abigail Allen and Savannah Page, while Austin Hill exhibited the grand champion Beef- master heifer. In the Chi influ ence division, Carlie How- ington showed the grand champion and Madison Abbs the reserve champion. Keely Shultz exhibited the grand champion Lim ousin heifer and Jackson Schieszer exhibited the reserve champion Limousin. Charlie Brooksher exhibited the grand champion low-per centage Simmental, and Justin Morgan and Landis Seagraves exhibited the grand and reserve champion Maine heifers, respectively. Bella Chandler exhibited the grand champion percent age Simmental, and Cindy Cooper exhibited the reserve champion percentage Sim mental. In the Shorthorn divi sion, Jackson Scheiszer took home grand champion hon ors while Kayley Edwards received reserve champion. In the Simmental breed classes, Cindy Cooper showed the grand champion while Madyson McDaniel received reserve champion honors. Beth McDonald and Susan McDonald exhibited the grand and reserve champion cow/calf pair, respectively. In the end, all of the champions came together for the overall grand cham pion heifer drive. Bella Chan dler’s percentage Simmen tal, Beyonce, was chosen as overall grand champion heifer, and Keely Shultz’s Limousin heifer was chosen as reserve overall champion heifer. Catera Jackson wins accolades Catera Elizabeth Jackson has been honored with mem bership into the International Dean’s List Society for exem plary academic performance at the University of West Geor gia. Jackson is the daughter of Anita and Avery Jackson; and the granddaughter of Doris Brown, Jefferson, and Kate Jackson, Madison. Jackson is majoring in biol ogy and anticipates graduat ing in spring 2019. The International Dean’s List Society provides scholar ship, study abroad and online personal and career develop ment opportunities. NGTC announces graduates North Georgia Technical College recently announced that 358 students completed their program of study during the 2015 summer and fall semesters. The school news deadline is noon on the Monday prior to the date of publication. Choices and consequences set March 8 The 2016 Choices and Con sequences program hosted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will be held Thursday March 10, at 6 p.m. at Com merce High School. Speakers will include Jason Loggins, Jefferson; Clint Fair, a Fellowship of Christian Athletes area representative for Banks, Jackson and Hall counties; Sande Bailey of Foundations for Living; and Warden Brooks Benton with the Whitworth Women’s Facility. Pre-K, kindergarten registration starts on March 7 at Jackson Schools The Jackson Coun ty School System has announced plans for Pre-K and kindergarten registration. Pre-K The JCSS elementary schools will have applications for Pre-K beginning March 7. Children must be four- years-old by Sept. 1, 2016, to attend Pre-K for the 2016-17 school year. Children must live in the school’s atten dance area to apply for Pre-K. The deadline to submit applications is Friday April 1, at 2 p.m. There will be a lottery drawing. Parents will be notified the results of the drawing by mail by Friday April 22. Kindergarten Kindergarten registration will be held March 30-31.
