CHS Girls’ Golf Commerce girls take fifth at state meet A quiet storm brews Commerce’s Charming Martin is one of three freshmen Lady Tiger golfers that helped lead Commerce to a fifth-place finish at state Commerce coach Matthew Lund believes the Lady Tiger golf team has big things ahead for it in the coming years. That’s because, a team made of three freshmen ended its first season of varsity golf with a fifth-place finish at state on Monday. At Goshen Plantation in Augusta, the Commerce girls combined for 227 strokes, plac ing fifth out of the eight teams competing. McKenzie McRee led the Lady Tigers with a 113, while Channing Martin posted a 114. Lauren Pyrzenski added a 120 (score did not count towards team total). “I couldn’t be more proud of our three girls,” said Lund. “All of them improved greatly throughout the year.” Portal took the Class A (public) title with a 186. Schley County (197) was second, while Claxton (207) was third. “I’m excited to have all three girls back next year,” said Lund. “They are going to be a force to be reckoned with down the road.” Fine finish ... Cont. from IB began. Acker was forced onto the track as a pit did not become available for the Class A pole vault prior to the race. Regardless, Acker outran the competition in the 1600-meters, setting a per sonal best mark of 4:47.44. Immediately after running a mile, he headed over to the pole vault pit where he took silver with a jump of 9-06. “To be able to come off the 1,600 and then go pole vault Thursday night — not a lot of people understand that he didn’t get a break,” said Hardy “He ran a 1600 and 10 minutes later he was pole vaulting. That’s incredi ble. That’s a testament to his physical and mental tough ness where he was able to do that and succeed. He got his height, he cleared height, he settled down and he finished second.” Commerce’s final state title came late on Thurs day night as Greyson Burke hit his personal best mark of 11-00 in the pole vault, earning his first title. Burke placed second in the pole vault at state last season. Jael Heredia’s sixth-place finish in the 1600-meters helped Commerce increase its day-one point total to 54, a 17-point lead over sec ond-place Mt. Zion. That lead stayed constant on Fri day during the preliminary races before the Tigers post ed a big day three. Barksdale got the Tigers started on Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the 100- meter dash (11.21). He also took fifth in the 200-meter race (22.84). Acker earned his second title and third top-two finish in the 800-meter race on Sat urday. Acker set a personal best time of 2:02.73, edging the second-place runner by four seconds, That finish helped Acker seal the indi vidual points title for Class A (public). “Jay’s a big part of our team, too, just the way he trains and makes everybody better, just what he does at practice everyday,” said coach Ron Minish. “He doesn’t let the other guys take off and has really been kind of a driving wheel all season for us. I’m really proud of him. Well deserved for him.” Jalen Walton finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.15), while Lane Sorrow finished third in the 300- meter hurdles (40.25). With a championship already in the bag, Com merce’s 4x100 relay team of Sorrow, Barksdale, DaJuan Wood and Chaz Thomas placed third with a time of 43.42. The Tigers put an excla mation point on their dom inant performance at the Georgia Olympics with a 4x400 relay title in the final event of the meet. Acker, Barksdale, Wood and Sor row combined for a sea son-best time of 3:24.99 to take gold. “We really pride ourselves on trying to train harder than anybody else in the state, and I think it showed itself this weekend,” said Minish. “I think our kids were ready. They were peak position, and like coach Hardy said, they ran better than they’ve run all year. We’re very proud of them — a group effort.” The Commerce boys have now won three state titles in school history, two of which have come in the last four years.
