The 21st annual A Day at the Fort celebra
tion was held Saturday and Sunday at Fort
Hollingsworth-White House. A ceremony hon
oring veterans opened the event.
“A Day at the Fort is held every year on
the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend to
celebrate local Appalachian heritage,” stated
Willette White Mote, president of Friends of
the Fort.
Throughout the two
day celebration, tours
were offered to visitors of
the historic fort and there
were demonstrations of
frontier skills along with
a Civil War reenactment. A car show was also
held during the event and storytellers read to
children.
Throughout the farm, Post Revolutionary
war living historians, period settlers and trad
ers, Civil War historians, and Fox Fire museum
veteran Barbara Taylor Woodall were set up.
BBQ plates and homemade icecream, bruns-
wick stew and fried pies were served for lunch.
A Sunday service was also held with Brother
Joey Young preaching.
“Fort Hollingsworth was built in 1793 by
Jacob Hollingsworth as a colonial defense
establishment for local settlers in the area,”
said Mote. “Jacob Hollingsworth came to
Georgia from North Carolina after the Revo
lutionary War to start a new life. The pioneer
settlers were granted land in Franklin County
Georgia. When they were settled, they found
that they were across the boundary line in the
Cherokee Nation. Forts were necessary for
their protection.”
Fort Hollingsworth is operated by the
non-profit organization, Friends of the Fort.
The mission of Friends of the Fort is to col
lect, preserve, share and promote the history
of Fort Hollingsworth, Northeast Georgia and
Southern Appalachia. Fort Hollingsworth is
listed on the National List of Historic Places
and operates as an open-air museum that is
free to visit.
“We also hold birthday parties, weddings,
and other special occasions,” said Mote.
