Commerce residents urged to keep yards trimmed
With grass, weeds and
shrubs growing rapidly, Com
merce building official Billy
Vandiver reminds residents
that they are expected to
maintain their property in
accordance with the Inter
national Property and Main
tenance Code and the city’s
cleanliness of premises ordi
nance.
“Both list tall grass and
weeds, inoperable vehicles,
discarded tires, auto parts,
etc.,” Vandiver said.”
The code enforcement
officer also pointed out that
it is the owner or tenant’s
responsibility to keep their
yards maintained all the way
to the street.
PLEASE
RECYCLE THIS
NEWSPAPER
If Vandiver spots a yard in
violation, the procedure is to
give notification in the form
of a code violation notice or
a letter.
“If anyone receives an
‘overgrown grass and weeds’
letter or notice on the door,
they have 10 days to cut their
property,” Vandiver said.
“After that, the city can take
bids and hire an outside con
tractor to clean the proper
ty at the owner’s expense.
Once the invoice is paid by
the city, we will file a lien
on the property in order to
recoup the funds.”
In addition, the city can
withhold utility service until
the lien is paid, which means
owners will not be able to
rent, lease or sell the proper
ty until they repay the city for
the cleanup.
Most of the problem prop
erties are rental units with
out-of-town owners.

I want to thank everyone who voted for me. You
are great. We will not have that entertainment center,
nor industry now, but that’s alright. This county has
lost millions over the years because of poor decisions,
and they try hard to lose more in the future. It’s sad that
politics is destroying our country, but it is. People like
me with my qualifications never run for public office
because they can not get elected. I’m so sad; not for me,
but for this county. Let’s now move on and support our
commissioners and remember we need Donald Trump,
someone who has guts to talk common sense and
change our dumb ways.
