BCHS Basketball
Leopard basketball team showing
'promising signs' this summer
By the time July rolls
around, the Banks County
High School boys’ basket
ball team will have played
over 50 summer league
games. And while offseason
competition may not hold
the same intensity level as
the regular season, Leopard
head coach Mike Cleveland
knows experience gained
this month will be pivotal in
the development of a young
team.
“We got a great group of
guys coming back,” said
Cleveland. “We had some
guys get valuable experi
ence last year playing along
side those kids that graduat
ed. I’ve been super pleased
with what I’ve seen so far.”
The Leopards graduat
ed four seniors in May and
have plenty of holes to fill
in the starting lineup. Sum
mer session games have
given Cleveland a chance
to assess the talent on
his team; however, things
haven gone perfectly for the
Leopards in June.
“The only negative about
this summer is that we’ve
lost two kids to injury,” said
Cleveland.
“Post players Dylan Orr
and Grant Rylee both suf
fered injuries that cut their
summer seasons short. Orr
suffered a fractured foot,
while Rylee tore ligaments
in his ankle.”
“That really hurts some of
the things we were doing,”
said Cleveland. “Both of
those guys are projected to
be starters next year and
are really key to what we
are doing.”
To try and turn a negative
into a positive, Cleveland
said he’s been rotating in a
cast of underclassmen play
ers and several have shown
promising development.
The starting lineup isn’t
the only big thing changing

for the Leopards heading
into next season. Cleveland
will employee a brand new
coaching staff in 2016-17.
Former assistant coach
Scott Strickland took a job
at Stephens County while
Drew Haggard left coaching
to pursue a business career.
Ryan Griffin, who has
assisted with the Lady
Leopards for the past cou
ple years, will head the
junior varsity squad, while
former Leopard player Tony
Bedford will coach the
ninth-grade team. One of
Cleveland’s former players,
Gatlin Boswell, will serve as
a community coach next
season.
The Leopards will close
out their summer slate of
games with a camp at Pres
byterian College next week.
“We played a plethora of
good teams this summer,”
said Cleveland. “We’ve
seen a lot of good com
petition this summer, and
we fared well. At this point,
we’ve only lost about three
games.”
And while Cleveland
admitted that the summer
season is more about get
ting everyone playing time
than a win-loss record, he
believes his teams’ perfor
mance this June showed
signs for a promising 2016-17.

Young Tiger swimmers get big
league experience at NEGA meet
Commerce’s youngest swim
mers experienced the competi
tion of a league-sanctioned meet
last Saturday at the North Georgia
Swim League Invitational at Ruby
Fulbright Aquatic Center in Clarks
ville.
“The invitational was for young
er swimmers to experience a big
ger meet compared to the dual
meets that we host at our home
pool,” said coach Pam Minish.
“This is an opportunity for them
to determine who their potential
competition will be at our district
meet.”
Minish said Commerce’s
S-under swimmers fared well in
the meet, with almost every swim
mer knocking seconds off his or
her best time.
The S-under Tiger Shark boys
(Cooper Moulton, Camden Moul
ton, Ethan Stovall and Will Bowen)
took gold in the 100-yard freestyle
relay, beating the second-place
team by a full six seconds.
Courtney Cameron placed sec
ond in the S-under girls’ 25-yard
freestyle and 25-yard butterfly -
swimming an all-star-qualifying
time in both events. She also took
gold in the 50-yard freestyle.
Bowen won the 8-under boys’
25-yard freestyle and placed fourth
in the 50-yard freestyle.
Camden Moulton, Madeline
Sears and Zoey Zellner all earned
personal bests at Saturday’s meet.
“Dropping theses amounts
of time in a short 25-yard race
is great,” said head coach Nick
Moulton. “It shows these kids are
practicing hard and swimming fast
when they need to.
The Tiger Sharks will host an
invitational meet with Jefferson on
Thursday.
