Commerce’s Anna Hardy was the Class A (public) state champion in the pole
vault event last May.
Athlete of the Year
Sue Ann Morales,
East Jackson, So.
Swept the Class AAA state titles in the 800 meters
(2:15) and 1,600 meters (4:59).
Comment: Including cross country, Morales already
has five state individual titles to her credit with two
years of eligibility still remaining.

Julia Graham,
Apalachee, Sr.
School record holder in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles
with times of 15.53 and 46.17 seconds respectively:
won Region 8-AAAAA titles and qualified for state in
both events.
Comment: Graham is known among her coaches as
a hard worker who puts in several hours on the track.
She will run at Piedmont College next year.
Analee Bradach,
Apalachee, Sr.
School record holder in the 800 meters (2:24.51),
1,600 meters (5:41.17) and 3,200 meters (12:40.39);
finished as Region 8-AAAAA runner-up in the 800
meters, qualifying for sectionals.
Comment: Bradach graduates from Apalachee as
the best distance runner in school history. She will run
at Piedmont College next year.
Brooke Hardegree,
Apalachee, Sr.
School record holder in the triple jump (34-11.5);
qualified for the state meet in the long jump; finished
third in Region 8-AAAAA in the triple jump
Comment: Hardegree focused much of her atten
tion this year on improving her runway speed, while
also improving in all other areas. She will compete
next year at Piedmont College.
Mallory Parson,
Banks Co., Sr.
Qualified for state in the 4 x 100 meters and for the
sectionals in the long jump and 100 meters; has
personal records of 13.54 in the 100 meters and 15-1
in the long jump; holds school records in all events in
which she competed.
Comment: Parson leaves Banks County as one of
the most talented athletes in the schools history. She
was a varsity starter in basketball, softball and track
her senior year.
Jaylyn Lack,
Banks Co., Sr.
Sectional qualifier in the high jump (PR: 4-8) and
state qualifier in the 4 x 100 meters and 4 x 400
meters.
Comment: Lack was a member of school-record
holding 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay teams. She
was one of Banks County's top point earners all year.
Bailey Brown,
Bethlehem Christian, Jr.
Competed at region in the 100 meters (13.45), 200
meters (28.75), shot put (27-9), 4 x 100 meters (56.2)
and 4x 400 meters (4:45); finished with 14 individual
points at the Region 1 -AAA meet.
Comment: Brown was Bethlehem Christians most
active scorer, producing points in every event in which
she competed in each meet this season.
Kate Massey,
Commerce, So.
State champion in the Class A Public 1,600 meters
(5:35.64) and 3,200 meters (12:09.06) and won the
area title in both events; also ran anchor for the fifth-
place 4 x 400 meter relay team.
Comment: The two-time state champion set the
tone in practices and training runs, according to her

Commerce secure a fourth-place finish in Class A
Public.
Anna Hardy,
Commerce, Jr.
State champion in the Class A Public pole vault with a
personal-best vault of nine feet and also won the area
title in that event.
Comment: Hardy didn't begin vaulting until late
2015 but capped off her 2016 campaign by taking the
gold at the state meet. Her coach praised her off-sea
son work ethic in meeting her championship goals.
Sydney McClure,
Commerce, Sr.
Area 4100-meter hurdle champion, area runner-up
in the 300-meter hurdles, fourth in the Class A Public
high jump, eighth in the Class A Public 300-meter
hurdles.
Comment: A well-rounded athlete, McClure con
tributed in multiple events for the Lady Tigers after
taking the 2015 season off. Her performances helped
Commerce finish fourth in Class A Public.
Shiquita Sturdivant,
East Jackson, So.
Qualified for state in four events—400 meters
(1:02.3), triple jump (33-9), long jump (16-6) and 4 x
400 meters (4:07, school record).
Comment: NA
Jaycie Ponce,
Jackson Co., Fr.
Set the school record in the 800 meters (2:27) and
finished 10th in Class AAA; finished as the county
runner-up in the 400 meters (1:03); ran anchor on a
school record-setting 4 x 400 team that placed ninth
in the state.
Comment: Despite being a freshman, Ponce was
relied upon to carry the weight and score points for
the Lady Panthers. Ponce just missed making the
state finals in the 800 meters and 4 x 400 meter
relay despite getting a late start on her season due
to basketball.
Bailye Hendley,
Jackson Co., Sr.
Qualified for state in the 100-meter hurdles;
qualified for sectionals in the 300-meter hurdles
by running a school record time of 48.08 at the
region meet; contributed to the Lady Panthers'
record-setting 4 x 400 meter team which fin
ished ninth at state.
Comment: Hendley served as the Lady Pan
thers' leader on the track and in the classroom
with 100.6 GPA (she is set to attend college on
a music scholarship).
Akera Benton,
Jefferson, So.
Finished fourth in the Class AAA triple jump,
covering a school-record distance of 36-08.25;
placed sixth in the Class AAA 400 meters
(59.80); set the school record in the long jump
with a distance of 17-8.
Comment: NA
Taylor Love,
Jefferson, Jr.
Won the Region 8-AAA title in both the 100-me-
ter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles; placed
eighth in the Class AAA 300-meter hurdles
(48.26).
Comment: NA
Maggie Dyer
Jefferson, So.
Finished fourth in the Class AAA 3,200 meters
with a school-record time of 11:26.70 and sixth
in the Class AAA 1,600 meters with a school-re
cord time of 5:17.56.

Journey Gurley,
Madison Co., Fr.
Finished ninth in Class AAAA in the pole vault
Comment: Madison County coaches feel this
freshman will only get better over the next three
years.
Briana Sims,
Winder-Barrow, Sr.
Finished third in Class AAAAA in both the discus
(129-9) and the shot put (40-10); placed second in
the shot put sectionals (42-4.25).

Micah Weathers,
Winder-Barrow, Jr.
Placed 11th in the Class AAAAA 3,200 meters
(11:42.65) and 12th in the Class AAAAA 1,600 me
ters (5:18.35); took third at sectionals in the 3,200.

Brenna McNamara,
Winder-Barrow, So.
Finished ninth in the Class AAAAA state pole vault
after finishing second at both region and sectionals.

Tomy Sitton, East Jackson
Sitton coached another state champion and led
the East Jackson girls to an eighth-place finish in
Class AAA.
BCPRD hosting youth 'fun and fitness' camps
The Banks County Parks and Recreation Department is hosting four sessions of a fun and fitness
camp that will be instructed by Reloaded Fitness.
Sessions are scheduled for June 27-31, July 55, July 11-15 and July 18-22. Each session will run from
8 am. to 1 p.m., and registration costs $100 (includes breakfast and lunch).
The camp is for kids ages 5-11.

• Kids Fun Camp - The BCPRD is hosting a Kids Fun Camp on June 27-30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.,
daily at the BCPRD gym. The camp is for children aged 5and-up, and registration costs $40. The camp
will be instructed try BCPRD staff members and certified special education teacher, Kayla Duncan.
