Members of the East Jack-
son High, East Jackson Mid
dle, West Jackson Middle,
and Jackson County High
FFA livestock judging teams
traveled to Texas A&M Uni
versity in College Station,
Texas for a three-day live
stock judging camp.
The members includ
ed: Carlie Howington, Cale
Howington, Wyatt Chandler,
Bella Chandler, Savannah
Page, Madison McDaniel,
Morgan McDaniel, Charlie
Brooksher, Hannah White,
Makayla Gooch, Jessie Cron
ic and Austin Hill. The group
was accompanied by FFA
Advisors Josh Whitworth,
Kate Wilson and April Davis.
The group got a campus
tour on Monday before the
camp began. Kevin Andrews,
TAMU doctoral student, took
the group through main cam
pus and west campus, into
Kyle Field, and shared many
of the traditions that TAMU
students abide by. After
lunch, the group arrived on
campus and was greeted by
the TAMU Livestock Judg
ing Team who hosted the
camp. The group attended
classes on the different live
stock judging fundamentals
and learned how to improve
their skills when judging
beef cattle, market hogs,
sheep and goats. The TAMU
team taught the group how to
overcome challenges while
making it fun and enjoyable.
Several members of the
team were asked to tell some
thing new that they learned
while at livestock judging
camp and to tell about the
most fun experience at the
camp.
Carlie Howington, East
Jackson High School FFA
president, stated, “I learned
how to better evaluate
hogs.” Her most fun expe
rience was, “meeting all the
new people that have the
same interests.”
Wyatt Chandler, East
Jackson FFA chaplin, stated,
“I learned new vocabulary
to use in my reasons,” and
his most fun experience was
“going to Grand Station and
playing laser tag with every
one at the camp.”
Cale Howington, East
Jackson Junior FFA presi
dent, said he “learned how
to better judge breeding
animals,” and his most fun
experience was “to tour
Texas A&M and to see
Disaster City, the emergency
response training center, at
the University.”
The Jackson County teams
plan to take the knowledge
learned at the camp into this
fall’s livestock judging com
petition. The experience will
also help the Jackson County
FFA grow by showing oth
ers how getting involved in
these Career Development
Events (CDEs) allows stu
dents opportunities to travel,
meet new friends, and help
develop skills in leadership
or agriculture.
