Volunteers devote their time and talent in a number of ways, by providing companionship to patients and/or a brief respite for caregivers. While volunteers do not provide medical or physical care to patients, they do give of their own time by making visits to the patient, reading, assisting with games and activities within assisted living facilities and nursing homes or simply making telephone calls to check on the patient. Volunteers typically commit from one to four hours of service each week; however, the frequency, days and length of visits are determined by the volunteer, based on their schedule.
