The Lady Eagles’ next game is 5:55 p.m. today (Wednesday) at home against in-county rival Jeffer son. East Jackson 4, Hart County 3 Three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth was enough of a cushion to give the Lady Eagles the home region win last Tues day. Marvin went 2 of 4 at the plate with two singles. She got the win on the mound, striking out nine batters in the complete game. Hannah Poole went 2 of 3 at the plate, smacking two singles and 2 RBI. Murphy went 1 of 3 with an RBI dou ble. Murphy’s two-run double in the fifth gave the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead. Poole fol lowed with an RBI single to bump the lead to 3-0. Running together Banks County and Commerce competed in a tri-meet run last Wednesday at Banks County High School. Photo by Charles Phelps Cross Country: Banks takes tri-meet BY CHARLES PHELPS The Banks County Leop ards’ cross country teams’ good starts continued last Wednesday with wins over Commerce and Madison County High School in both the girls’ and boys’ compe titions. The heat was a factor in the race, head coach William Foster said, and it showed in the teams’ times. But even in the heat at home, Foster was able to see how his runners reacted to hills, since Banks’ home course has “no shortage of them.” He told runners not to worry about time, but rather worry about placing. “Both teams did a great job of running together as a group, which helps us score lower,” Foster stated. “They did a very good job of that. “We also had several kids step up and solidify their varsity positions on both teams with good perfor mances. The girls, especial ly, had a good race overall and closed down the gaps between them that were seen (last) Saturday. I am very happy with how both teams performed.” Before Tuesday’s run against Elbert, Franklin, Lumpkin, Rabun and Ste phens counties, Foster stressed to his runners when they need to “run conserva tively” and when they need to “really push the pace.” “I think we have to run a smart first mile and then use the knowledge of the course to our advantage,” he said. “It will be good for us to run a more crowded race, where our runners have to work a little harder as they move through the pack and position themselves well.” Tuesday’s home meet didn’t finish before press time. The Commerce girls’ team finished second to Banks County. Kate Massey was the indi vidual winner with a time of 25:40. “That was a good time for her at this point and about 36 seconds better than she ran at the same meet last year,” head coach Mark Hale said. Brittany Webb finished sixth with a time of 28:04, over 90 seconds faster than last year, Hale said. Madison Rodriguez finished in 10th place with a time of 29:26. Only six girls competed for Commerce and only five competed in the boys’ race for the team, because Hale felt those were the “only run ners ready to run a meet at this point in the season.” The boys finished in third, but Hale was encouraged by the times of his lead run ners. Austin Black posted a time of 21:45. Jose Manuel Verde, Jackson Purvis and Chase Bridges all finished within one minute of each other, 23:58-24:52. “I’m looking for big things from each one of those three young men,” Hale said. John Bradley finished with a time of 27:19. “It was an extremely hot day on a course that is tough to post a good time on, so I was more concerned with how we ran relative to our competition instead of our times on the stopwatch,” Hale said.
