PAGE 6B THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS • THE COMMERCE NEWS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 Game Day held at Commerce Public Library Enjoying 'game day' Eli Mott, Erik Mullis and Jarred Hill were among the young adults participating in Game Night last week On Aug. 25, the young adult group at the Commerce Public Library sponsored a Game Day and staff mem bers said the participants had a wonderful time. There were a number of games to choose from and plenty of prizes. The YA gaming day will be the second Thursday of every month, starting in October, from 5- to 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The library staff has expressed its appreciation to Capt. Ken Harmon for sending Officer Antonio Hudson over to rep resent the police force and for their involvement with the teens. Sunshine Duckett, the youth coordinator, is excited about this ongoing event and expressed appreciation to Justin Strickland for his sup port and participation. LEARNING EXPRESS There is much more to the Learning Express resources highlighted in this space last week. It also provides interactive computer courses that are an easy way to learn how to use the computer, the Internet and the most commonly needed software applications. There are basic, interme diate and advanced courses in Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Publisher, Visio and Word, as well as courses in Adobe Illustrator and Pho toshop. Patrons interested in improving skills for their own enjoyment or job advance ment would benefit from any of these, but check this space next week for more about the Learning Express job and career site. The library staff express es thanks to patrons who continue to donate videos to the library’s collection. In the last week, 15 children’s and 28 adult, new-to-the-library videos were added to the shelves. BOOK SALE The Friends of the Com merce Library will be hold ing their annual book sale on Thursday, Friday and Satur day, Sept. 22, 23 and 24. This huge sale will completely take over the auditorium so patrons should plan to take advantage of the large variety and great prices. On Friday, Sept. 16, at noon, the Book Vine book club will briefly discuss the book, “Room,” by Emma Donoghue, and then watch the award-winning movie. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk for checkout. There will also be lunch that day. FINAL WINNERS The final four adult read ing winners were drawn this week. This program, spear headed by adult coordinator Jill Roper, was met with such enthusiasm that it will defi nitely be repeated. The covered dish lunch will be served in the church fellowship hall at 1 p.m. Those who attend are asked to bring enough food and drink for their family, as well as some to share with others. The Lewallen family reunion committee is in search of descendants of the first generation of “Llewel lyns” that settled in America and may be residing in the Jefferson area. Thomas Llewellyn, born in Wales in 1645, came to the colony of Virginia in 1663. The Llewallyn name has gone through several spell ings, including Lewelling, Luallin, Luelling, Lewellin and Lewallen. Today, there are family groups around the United States with each of these spellings who can trace their roots back to Thomas Llewellyn. Joseph C. Lewal len, is a fourth generation and direct descendant of Thomas Llewellyn. Jim and Marilyn McLendon of Homer United Meth odist Church celebrated their 62nd anniversary on Monday, Sept. 5. The couple says their long marriage for them has been an experience of true love. They started dating during the sum mer of 1954 after they met and were married in Americus (her hometown) seven weeks later at the alter of First Methodist Church, where they had met. The McLendons are in their 20th year serving the Homer UMC congregation. They reside in their home on Sullivan Drive in Homer.
