PAGE 6A THE BANKS COUNTY NEWS • THE COMMERCE NEWS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 Crime/Public Safety Jackson County Sheriffs Office arrests S.C. juveniles arrested in 1-85 hit-and-run accident Two South Carolina juve niles were arrested last week in a hit-and-run incident on Interstate 85. According to a Jackson County Sheriffs Office inci dent report, on Aug. 29, the juveniles hit a vehicle on the Interstate and were seen get ting off on Exit 147. A deputy made contact with a vehicle fitting the description at the Valero gas station on Maysville Road and saw two black males standing beside it. When approached by the deputy, the suspects fled the scene on foot and were apprehended in a near by wooded area. The vehicle they were driv ing had been reported stolen that day. The names of the suspects were not released because they are juveniles. Dive teams assemble at reservoir Dive teams from Banks and Hall counties assemble for the recovery of a vehicle submerged in the Commerce reservoir in southern Banks County. The 1989 Honda Accord was reported stolen in 1990. Car stolen in 1990 pulled from Commerce reservoir The Banks County and Hall County sher iffs office dive teams pulled a vehicle stolen in 1990 out of the Commerce reservoir last Thursday. A citizen who conducts sonar searches as a hobby found the vehicle on Wednes day Aug. 31, and contacted the Banks County Sheriff’s Office. Divers located the 1989 Honda Accord 20-25 feet from the shore in about 10 feet of water. “It was quite evident by the condition of the vehicle that it had been in the lake for a long period of time,” said Carissa McFadden, a spokesperson for the Banks County Sheriffs Office. The 300-acre reservoir, located off Grove Level Road in Banks County serves as the source of drinking water for Commerce. Nicholson pair faces drug charges The Jackson County Sheriffs Office announced the arrest of two Nicholson residents Wednesday on drug-related charges. The arrests stemmed from an unrelated investigation that led to the residence of Gregory Cullen Watts, 32, and Melissa Ann Rossborough, 35, both of Nicholson. Officers searched their residence and discovered a quantity of methamphetamine, narcotics and items used for the consump tion and distribution of the drugs. Watts is charged with possession of meth amphetamine, possession of drug-related objects and giving false information to law enforcement officers. Watts Rossborough Rossborough is charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of meth amphetamine with the intent to distribute, three counts of possession of dangerous drugs, pills not in their original container and possession of drug-related objects. Banks County Sheriffs Office arrests Seven arrests reported in Banks County The Banks County Sheriffs Office reported seven arrests last week, including the fol lowing: •Gary Wilson Coley 70, 2617 Old State Road, Pender grass, probation violation. •Leif Lawrence Burke, 37, 122 Ellison Street, Clarkesville, possession of methamphet amine with intent to distrib ute, theft by receiving stolen property, criminal trespass, DUI, driving with a suspend ed license and a tail light vio lation. •John Edward Dove, 39, 1188 Sims Harris Road, Lula, theft by taking. • Joseph Kevin Farmer, 39, 736 Keller Road, Mt. Airy battery. •Rhonda Jill O’Kelly 41, 1308 Ervin Chambers Road, theft by receiving stolen prop erty possession of metham phetamine and theft by tak ing. •Macayla Shea Osborne, 17, 74 Piedmont Street, Com merce, theft by taking. •Michael Troy Wilburn, 44, 265 Gordon Road, Com merce, theft by receiving sto len property possession of marijuana and theft by taking. Fire destroys utility building A fire early on the morning of Aug. 30 destroyed a utility building on Harris Street in Commerce. The Commerce, Nicholson and Jackson County Correc tional fire departments responded at 6:04 a.m. to find the 20 by 20 building fully engulfed in flames. The building was not in use, and no injuries were reported. Just one arrest this week by city police Officers of the Commerce Police Department reported just a handful of incidents and a single arrest in the lead-up to the Labor Day weekend. Due to the holiday only inci dents and arrests taking place Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 are included. One Arrest An officer patrolling on South Elm Street at 12:22 a.m. on Wednesday Aug. 31, noticed a woman sitting on the steps in front of Ivie Funeral Home. He stopped to ask if she was okay and what she was doing. Casondra Francis Gosnell, 29, 221 College Avenue, Com merce, told the officer she had gone to the store, was on her way home and had stopped to rest on the steps. When the officer ran her information, she came back with an unspecified warrant from Jackson County so the officer arrested her and trans ported her to the Jackson County Jail. Incidents Police also investigated four incidents during the week, including: •theft by taking at a Scott Street address where a man said his wife left the residence after removing several items from a safe, including currency and checks that were for her husband’s personal account. The man told police that he and his wife had separate accounts and at no time has she used the accounts. He pro vided documentation in regard to his personal account, and the officer recommended that he freeze the account to pre vent his wife from making any transactions. The man advised that his wife no longer lives at the Scott Street address and does not have a phone. •recovery of a bicycle and a billfold at a Pine Avenue res idence where a woman said she found a black and red mul tispeed bicycle in the driveway and was not able to locate its owner. The responding offi cer looked around the area and found a wallet containing a Social Security card and a Georgia driver’s license. Anoth er officer contacted the Banks County Sheriffs Office to have a deputy go to the address listed on the driver’s license, but it turned out the man no longer lived there and that a phone number associated with the driver’s license was no longer valid. The bicycle came back not on file and is impounded at the police department. •a dispute among neigh bors on Cedar Drive, where a man said a black male drove in front of his property and yelled, “one false move” at the com plainant. It was in reference to the complainant being charged with aggressive driving a few months earlier during which his attorney had advised him to file a report if the other party harassed him. •criminal damage to prop erty on Hill Street where some one ran over a mailbox. A neighbor told the officer that he heard a loud noise early one morning and thought someone had struck a wooden fence. He said he saw a black male help another black male pick up the front end of a new car “stuck on the curb or something” at the location where the mailbox was hit. City of Commerce NOTICE OF PROPERTY TAX INCREASE The City of Commerce has tentatively adopted a millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by 3.42% over the roll back rate. All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearing on this tax increase to be held on August 15, 2016 at 6:00 P.M. Times and places of additional public hearings on this tax increase are on August 19, 2016 at 12:00 P.M. at the Commerce Civic Center, August 29, 2016 at 6:00 P.M. at the Commerce Civic Center, and on Septem ber 9, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the Commerce Civic Center. This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 4.02 mills, an increase of .133 mills over the roll-back rate. Without this tenta tive tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 3.887 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $100,000 is approximately $5.32 and the proposed tax increase for nonhomestead property with a fair market value of $100,000 is ap proximately $13.30.
