The Rev. Curt Duncan, a Church of God minister from South Carolina, will be the guest speaker. Homecoming will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 25. Spe cial guests will be Regeneration featuring Kenny Baker and Company. Lunch will follow the service. The church is located at 5916 Hwy. 98, Maysville. The Rev. Winfred Bingham is the pastor. Maysville United Methodist Church to host singing Maysville United Methodist Church is hosting a Southern Gospel Singing at 6:30 on Thursday, September 8, featuring Frankie D and Family. On September 15, Tony Edwards will perform. On September 22, The Christian Aires are set to perform. On September 29, Harold Riggs, One Heart from Florida and Dillard and Refuge will sing. On October 6, Jordan’s River is scheduled to perform. Homer UMC to remember '9-11" with special service Homer United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Sycamore and Church streets, will remember the attack on America by foreign terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, with a special service at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday. The pastor, the Rev. Jim McLendon, will preach and special music will be provided. The church will delay its planned celebration of Grand parent’s Day by one week due to 9-11 falling on Sunday. The Grandparent’s Day observance is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18, at 9:45 a.m. with grandparents being singled out for special recognition at the worship hour. The Rev. Jim McLendon, pastor, will preach, and special music will be presented throughout the service. The church is located at 141 Sycamore Street, one block east of Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Homer. Recipe of week: Graham Cracker Cake 26th annual Art in the Park planned The 26th annual Art in the Park festival will be held at Hurricane Shoals Park Sept. 17-20 featuring arts and crafts, entertainment and food. The festival will kick off with a 5K Mill Race at 8 a.m. Late registration/check-in will be held from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. in Pavilion #4. The Maysville entrance will be closed to traffic for the race. The race awards will be pre sented in the amphitheater at 9 a.m. The festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with arts and crafts, including paintings, pottery, jewelry, wooden carvings bowls and signs and painted glass. Food booths will be open offering a variety of dishes. Barbecue will be sold at the concession stand. In the Kids’ Zone, located on the Maysville side, inflat- ables, face painting, ponies and puppet shows will be offered. The Tumbling Waters Society table, located on the Maysville side, will feature the sale of tickets for the duck dash, corn meal and T-shirts. The historic grist mill will be operating and corn meal will be offered for sale. Cornbread, beans and cob bler will be sold in the Peth- el Cabin. Miniature golf will be offered at the “Spirit of the River” golf course for $3 for adults and $2 for children. In the Heritage Village, a living history presenta tion of an 1800s village will be presented. Handmade items from the 1800s will be offered for sale. There will also be tours of cabins, a blacksmith, folk art and his torical craft demonstrations, a produce and plant stand, hit or miss engines and a jail wagon. Civil War Union and Confederate camps will be in the village presenting drills, history, cooking and haversack displays. Military and civilian wares will be offered for sale from Sutlers and Period Apothecary. The Chuck Wagon Gang will be cooking. Southern gospel music will be presented at the Pickin’ Stage featuring a jam session with Dugar Strick land and Friends. The Commerce School of Dance will perform at noon in the amphitheater. The Ianuario Memorial Bluegrass Festival will be hosted by the BlueBilly Grit Band in the amphitheater from 1 to 6 p.m. Performers will include: 1 p.m., Dixie land Troubadours: 2 p.m., open jam with all pickers welcome: 3 p.m., Grassville; 4 p.m. The Shoals Creek Stranglers: and 5 p.m., Hank, Pattie and The Cur rent from North Carolina. A huge Civil War battle will be presented in the Her itage Village at 2 p.m. with artillery and cavalry, as well as field hospital demonstra tions after the battle. Winners of the children’s art contest will be recog nized in the Heritage Village at 3 p.m. Historic music on violin with Miss Gracie will be pre sented at the Heritage Vil lage Chapel from 3:30 pm. to 5 p.m. SUNDAY On Sunday, a Southern gospel jam session with Dugar Strickland and friends will be presented from noon to 4:30 p.m. The booths, children’s art displays, food conces sions, Kids’ Zone, min iature golf, grist mill and TWS table sales will be open from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. An old-fashioned church service with Chaplin Joey Young will be in the Heri tage Village Chapel at 12:30 p.m. Old-fashioned demon strations and Civil War drills and displays will be in the Heritage Village from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Photos in the jail wagon will also be offered. A Civil War battle will be present ed at 2 p.m. Shaped note singing will be offered from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Ianuario Memorial Bluegrass Festival will be in the amphitheater from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The sched ule includes: 1 p.m., Pee Wee Garrison Tribute Jam; 2 p.m., open jam with all pickers welcome; 3 p.m., The Freight Hoppers; 4 p.m., 3 Bucks Shy; and 5 p.m., BlueBilly Grit. The finale of the festival will be the Duck Dash at 5 p.m. on the Maysville side of the river. 4-H Archery team plans 'Turkey Shoot' The Jackson County 4-H Archery team will hold a “Turkey Shoot” and Family Fun Day on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. and on Nov. 19 at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event will be held at 167 Wages Bridge Road, Athens. The shoot will benefit Jackson County Family Connection. The event will be an 18-meter indoor FITA competition open to all ages. The cost will be $10 per shooter. Inflatables and a mechanical bull will be set up on Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wristbands are $10 each. Vendor booths will be set up with gift items for purchase. Lunch and drinks will be available to purchase. Drawings for prizes will also be held. Tickets are $2 each or one ticket for every donation to Jack- son County Family Connection. Items needed by Family Connection include soap, deodorant, shampoo, tooth brush, tooth paste, mouthwash, pest control, lice treatments, socks, underwear and gift cards. A Graham Cracker Cake recipe submitted by Elizabeth Martin of Commerce has been selected as the recipe of the week. 1 stick margarine or butter (cream) 2 cups sugar 5 eggs, add one at a time 1 cup sweet milk. Add a little at a time, along with a box of graham crackers 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup pecans, chopped 1 cup coconut 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 350 degrees until done. This makes three layers. ICING 1 large can pineapple 1 Vi cups sugar 3 tablespoons flour 1 jar cherries, chopped Cook until thick. Cool 10 minutes and then ice the cake.
