Cont. from IB lead with 5:16 left in the first quarter. The Panthers respond ed with a 10-play drive to tie the game at 7-7 as the first quarter closed. The Panthers’ next pos session started with a short field due to a bad snap on the Leopards’ punt. Three plays later, the Panthers found the end zone to take the lead 14-7 with 10:42 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing Leop ards’ possession, Good win found Bennett for a 20-yard gain and Dyke house rattled off a 40-yard run. The drive ended with a touchdown when Good win dashed into the end zone on an 11-yard run to tie the game at 14-14 with 8:35 until halftime. Union County grabbed the lead again on a nine- play drive, but the Leop ards didn’t fold before the first half ended as they strung together a 14-play, 83-yard drive that included two fourth-down conver sions. The drive ended with a Goodwin-Dykehouse connection for an 18-yard score to tie the game 21-21 going into halftime. The Panthers regained the lead after halftime, scoring on their opening possession on an 11-yard run. Goodwin suffered his first of two interceptions on the Leopards’ open ing drive, but the defense forced a turnover on downs, giving the offense new life. The Leopards’ offense capitalized on the opportu nity as Dykehouse plunged in from a yard away to tie the game at 28-28 with 11:41 left in the game. The Panthers’ offense scored on its next two pos sessions, which put the game away at 42-28. Goodwin credited the Panthers with bringing “the heat” in the loss. “They were a good team,” he said. “I think we will get past this. This is a good learning game for us. I think we will come out on top after this. This is a tough loss, but we knew coming in this is a really good team. If we make a couple of more plays, we win the game. You’ve got to take the positives out of that.” Goodwin said the receiv ers are running better routes than they were ear lier in the season, which is helping him a lot as a quarterback, plus it’s help ing the offense as a whole. “I just hope we keep building on that and that our receivers just keep getting better,” he said. “I said after our last game that we have a good receiv ers group. It’s one of the best in our region, I think. We just got to keep build ing and keep getting better week to week.” Goodwin is excited to get region play started. “I think we have a good chance of going to the playoffs,” he said. “I’ve started three years in a row and never been to the playoffs, so I want to really get there my senior year.” Monticello The Hurricanes are win less in 2016, including two shutout losses at the hands of Athens Christian School in Week 1 and Jackson County Comprehensive High School last Friday. Monticello graduated 14 seniors from 2015. Max Dotson leads the Hurricanes in receiving yards with 58. Jay Johnson leads the ground attack with 143 rushing yards. Braden Lynch is the leading passer for the team. Monticello owns the overall record against Banks County, 10-3. The two haven’t played since 1995 when Monticello won 42-0. The last three games have been shutout wins for the Hurricanes. The last win for the Leopards in the series came in 1985. Commerce ... Cont. from IB week. The Golden Eagles (1-2, 0-2) are led on the offensive side of the ball by quarterback Cody Lee, wide receivers Terrell Mattox and Richard Jibunor, offensive lineman Cody Davis and tight end Addison Brown. Jibunor, a junior, is playmaker for the Golden Eagles. He has offers from Tennessee, Auburn, Coastal Carolina and Southern Mississippi. “They do a lot on offense that makes you have to prepare well,” Brown stated. On defense, the Golden Eagles are led by linebackers AJ Rowe and Travis Kellogg, defensive linemen David Sanford and Jodie Lawrence. Jibunor will also play defense at the linebacker and defensive back spots. “They are very good on defense,” Brown said. Commerce owns the series record, 9-1, including the last three in the series. Last year’s Commerce win was a 27-14 game. In 2014, the Tigers squeaked out a 10-7 victory and 2013 was an overtime thriller that Commerce won by one point, 22-21. Commerce has pitched two shutouts in the series, 2011 and 2002. Athens Christian has a win over Monticello and two sev en-point losses to region opponents, Prince Avenue Christian and Athens Academy.
