someone and send them to the academy. $15,000 to
$18,000, at least.”
“More than that,” offered mayor pro tern Keith Burchett.
“Every time we turn one of those officers, it’s a ton of
money,” Hill continued. “It’s more than buying a new uni
form and a pistol.”
The department has 22 sworn officers. It needs 12
vehicles, aside from the K-9 and administrative vehicles,
said officer Chris Richey, who made a presentation to the
city council. The department currently has nine “front-line
vehicles,” and several of those are approaching 100,000
miles, at which point they are generally not considered
dependable enough for full-time service.
“Right now, with two officers in one car doing 30,000
miles a year on average,” Richey said. “Take one officer
out, that leaves roughly 15,000 miles.”
The plan is to not buy any more vehicles for four years,
then to resume buying two new cars annually.
Wascher said he will have a policy covering take-home
vehicles before the new vehicles are in service, which
could be two months after the council approves the pur
chase.
