During the program, the Banks County and Homer Fire Departments were on hand offering fire safety and pre vention tips and advice. Firefighters went to each classroom to show and walk chil dren through what to do and the steps to take in an emergency situation. Children learned aspects of CPR and the operation of dialing 911, among other emergency information. Scotty Mathis, Banks County Fire Department captain, said one thing they teach children is to always tell 911 the address before telling them the situations, so in case contact is lost, 911 can still send someone to help. Outside of the classroom children got an up-close look at fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. They also toured a fire safety house simulator borrowed from the Cornelia Fire Department. Inside the safety house, children got as low as they could to crawl under smoke that seeped through the cracks in the walls of the mobile simulator. Inside, students took turns using a bed sheet to block smoke from entering through cracks in the wall and learned how to safely test doors to see if they are hot, in case fire is on the other side. During the demonstration, local firefighters and EMTs taught children about fire alarms, tips for safety while cooking, how to make a safety plan and why it’s important to have a meeting point outside the home. Heather Nicholson, a second-grade teacher, said some of the children were afraid of the smoke in the fire safety house at first but she believes that it takes the shock out of the situation so that if a real emergency presented itself the children would know what to do and be less afraid. Nicholson said one step being taken at the school is to make sure each child has his or her address on their book bag to help the children remember their addresses and other necessary information in case of an emergency. Chris Evans, counselor, said local firefighters also come to the school once a week to work with special education children for one-on-one lessons on fire safety and to read to the children. Evans said the school and fire department are trying to get more involved to “bridge the gap between the community and school.” Besides visiting schools, the fire department also visits senior centers to work with residents on plans for fire safety and prevention along with other emergency procedures. The Banks County Fire Department has a kit called “Vial of Life” for seniors, in case of an emergency. This bag goes on the refrigerator and includes the senior’s medical history and other information, and includes two stickers for their windows to let the fire department know that the senior has the kit.
