Toddler in road leads to arrest on Oconee County warrant
A man was arrested for an outstanding war
rant after a neighbor reported a toddler wander
ing in the middle of the road. Ricky Lee Ivester,
999 Sosbee Road, Talmo, was arrested by the
Jackson County Sheriffs Office for Oconee
County on a traffic warrant.
A neighbor saw the two-yearold child walk
ing in the middle of the road, got it out of the
road and gave it some crackers.
When officers arrived at the complainant’s
house, the toddler had already been picked up
by other juveniles.
Officers spoke with the child’s mother, who
said she was asleep while the kids were outside
playing. Ivester and a friend had been outside
working on a radio in his vehicle, but weren’t
aware the children had wandered off from the
residence.
Officers said the yard was cluttered and there
were several bags of garbage on the back porch.
The interior of the house was reportedly dirty
and cluttered and there were exposed electrical
wires in an outlet.
Ivester was arrested for a warrant after check
ing identification.
The Department of Family and Children Ser
vices was also called.

after officers found dog feces and trash in her
house, along with other hazards. Rayanna Ovel-
la Morrison, 28,149 Parks Street, Jefferson, was

to children.
Officers went to the residence to serve a writ
of possession. When they entered the home,
they smelled urine that “was so strong you
could hardly breathe.”
Officers also found shoes, cans, dog feces,
trash, clothing and a dirty diaper on the floor.
Some of the dog feces “was so old it was turning
to powder, others had mold.” Dog urine report
edly covered the hallway floors.

Sheriff expects no security issues at polls
The Jackson County
Sheriff’s Office will “drop
in” to local polling places
during the Nov. 8 election,
but Sheriff Janis Mangum
said deputies will not stay
at the precincts.
Some elections officials
across the country worry
about the potential for vio
lence as a result of the his
torically contentious presi
dential election pitting Hil
lary Clinton against Donald
Trump. Trump has publicly
urged his supporters to go
to polling places to watch
for voter fraud and has
repeatedly insisted that the
election is rigged against
him and voter fraud— from
Democrats —will be wide
spread.
In some districts where
polling places are at
schools, schools are sus
pending classes for the
day, out of concern about
election-related violence.
None of Jackson County’s
precincts feature voting in
school buildings.
“I really don’t,” Mangum
replied, when asked if she
anticipated any election-relat
ed issues on Nov. 8 requiring
a JCSO presence, but she
added that her office will be
ready to respond promptly
should anything arise.
