Jackson chamber members briefed on progress
Attendees of last Wednes
day’s breakfast of the Jack-
son County Area Chamber of
Commerce got a pep talk on
the organization’s accomplish
ments in 2016 and its impor
tance to the community.
Jim Shaw, president and
CEO, and Melissa Britt, vice
president of operations, pre
sented both an overview of
the chamber’s organization
and an review of 2016 accom
plishments.
Shaw spoke first. He
reminded the audience of the
chamber’s structure and pur
pose.
“We are an organization of
members, a collection of busi
nesses, government entities,
association’s and individuals
collectively pursuing our goals
and volunteering to build this
community” he said, “it is a
wonderful organization of vol
unteers, all trying to do good. It
is humbling to be part of this.”
Shaw has been active with
the chamber for decades, but
became its paid CEO in Jan
uary.
Ten months into 2016, Shaw
said the chamber helped Jack-
son County attract more than
$100 million in capital invest
ments and 1,000 new jobs.
“It’s been a great year,” he
said.
He suggested there is more
to come, pointing out that 4
million square feet of industrial
space is under construction in
Jackson County.
“Do the quick math. That’s
$200 a square foot, that’s $200
million in investment added to
the tax base,” he said. “That’s
without tenants. Tenants will
come in and will add machin
ery and equipment and jobs.”
In addition, he said, existing
companies are also expand
ing.
“We’re making the pie big
ger, so everybody’s slice of the
pie is bigger,” he said. “That’s
a good thing.”
Among the other accom
plishments Shaw listed to
which the chamber contrib
uted were the renewal of the
special purpose local option
sales tax (SPLOST) for a sixth
round, reaching a member
ship level of 516, 79 of which
are new members and the

Year Luncheon.
The Jackson County Area
Chamber of Commerce will

Cantrell, from Warner Rob

She toured the country to

holding of 41 events, ranging
from major fundraisers to
lunch-and-learn meetings.
“This is a busy chamber,”
he observed. “It’s been my
honor to serve you, really. It’s
been a fun 10 months of the
year.”
Britt listed ways mem
bers can get more out of
their chamber membership
through services, marketing
and programs.
As for services, Britt talk
ed about the ability to gain
exposure through printed
information placed at the
chamber office, attendance at
ribbon cuttings, participation
in T-Shirt Fridays, and offer
ing “hot deals and special
offers” through the chamber’s
TGIF newsletter. In addition,
she spoke of cost-saving
opportunities through the
Georgia Chamber Federation,
the Drug-Free Workplace pro
gram, utilization of the cham
ber’s membership database
and taking advantage of its
“Member Zone,” which facil
itates member-to-member
communication.
Marketing opportunities
include the chamber newslet
ter, a business directory and
participation with programs
and committees, which gives
members exposure to new
people and to referrals.
“The business directory is
how people find you and your
products and services,” Britt
said. “People call the cham
ber for all kinds of reasons....
Don’t be surprised what the
people call the chamber and
ask for.”
As for programs, Britt insist
ed that attending programs
and volunteering on projects
and committees present
opportunities for members to
meet other people and make
business connections. She
pointed to Leadership Jack-
son in particular, as giving par
ticipants access to key people
with whom business relation
ships can develop.
